It's basically like making an image of a computer, so when you flash it back, you're right back to where it was when you took the backup. CWM takes a total backup including the cache, but other recoveries like TWRP let you not include the cache. Doesn't really matter, it just rebuilds.

Note that the LTE/CDMA radios are not part of the nandroid backup process, or even part of flashing most roms. So any radios you flashed before carry over, and are not touched when you flash a rom. If you want the newest radios you need to flash them.

Great thanks! Guess I'll be messing around with some Jelly Bean ROMs this weekend when i can afford to have a non-working phone (can't risk it during weekdays. I want to test out Google Now to see how it compares with Siri on my wife's iPhone 4s. Maybe I can convince her to switch.

I'm pretty happy with CM9 ICS on my Sprint Galaxy Nexus; everything seems pretty stable. Main "3rd party app" I use is Wireless Tether since I use it to tether my personal laptop at work during lunch to check emails etc.

Is Jelly Belly v3.6 pretty stable for daily use? Does Wireless Tether work on it or is there a built-in hotspot that would work?

Can I revert to CM9 ICS if Jelly Belly v3.6 for some reason doesn't work for me? Thanks guys.

Jelly belly 3.6 is rock solid stable for me. Wireless tether works with the built on tethering however I haven't gotten wireless tether app to work ... but I only tried it once.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm relatively new to Android devices (previous job mandated we use....Blackberries) and always wonder how "complete" of a backup those nandroid backups in CWM are. So basically I can take a nandroid backup of my current config, mod the crap out of my phone and flashing 3 different ROMs to test/play, and then finally restore the old nandroid backup and it would be as if nothing happened? Or will my modem firmware etc. be "forever changed" due to flashing new ROMs despite the nandroid backup? Thanks again.

yes make backup, label it something like STOCK - date
so you don't forget what it is.
Wish RomManager asked you to name before backing up.
Make sure you buy titanium backup so that you can restore your apps easily. Only restore the apps, not data-- restoring data usually leads to problems IMO.

Then install one of your 3-4 roms, restore all apps, carry on playing for a while, try another ROM, etc...

Nandroid backups typically work flawlessly in getting you back to a stable, working ROM most of the time. The one time it didn't work for me was last night when I restored a nandroid of my stock rooted ROM on my Sprint GNex to update the phone's PRL. I know there are other ways to update the PRL but I wanted to try a new ROM anyway and thought this would be quick and easy. Wrong.

I restored my stock rooted ROM with no problems and updated my PRL but something overwrote TWRP and I couldn't get past the bootloader, getting the dead Android with the red exclamation point instead. I finally figured out how to revert everything back to working order but that was a bit of an unwelcome surprise.

I thought nandroid was only a backup of your operating system ROM. In other words, no settings, apps, etc.

Nope. It is a complete system image, including kernel. New CWM recovery nandroid is much faster & smaller.

I must say, after using JB for a few days, performance is indeed greatly improved. It didn't need fixing but it's even better now. Very happy. Boot times improved as well!

You Verizon Nexus folks tethering OK? I've read that native (hacked) is hit and miss across ROMs, and the old standby Wifi Tether doesn't work on JB.

Im good on Vicious. Although I cant tell if its the ROM or if its Verizon, but my download speeds have been slower as of late.

So what's the deal with Google Now? I enable location services and GPS and it's bonkers. I ask a simple question like where's the nearest gas station and it gives me locations that are ~10KM away.

I am also.

Just got my Nexus from the play store yesterday and activated it on T-Mobile with their $30/month plan.

Phone works great and I'm going to save $50 a month.

Make sure you follow the instructions for setting it up, like setting up your location ...

I did. I'm getting a feeling that the Nexus S version is a little toned down. If I ask it who's the prime minister of South Africa, or how tall taylor swift is, it wont give me a picture, or a source - just the one liner data.

Even the voice craps out sometimes, if I ask it to convert 30KM into miles, it will give me the card, but wont speak the data (youtube videos have shown it speaks when queried like this). Other than that, JB has increased phone performance a substantial amount, pretty happy with that.

I wish my tmobile service was good here, I moved literally 2 miles away and i have no signal in the house, I went with att so I could use straight talk and have perfect signal now but my data speed is way slower.

Goolge said the Google Now (so voice talk back) only works in US for now. You could try by changing the search settings to google.com, not you local google url like google.co.za and also change the language to English US.

Welcome to the club. Best deal in town, isn't it?

Heck yea, I was a little worried about the 100 minutes, but I only used 200 last month anyway. I also ported my old number to Google and have good wifi at home, and a MiFi in my work van, so I'm going to try GrooveIP.

Wishing there was a better solution for SMS/MMS though through GV.

I just installed a CM10 kang to see what all the fuss is about. Man, the voice recognition in voice search is hilariously bad. I found that using the English (UK) pack works a little better even though I'm American, but it's still pretty awful.

Is not working well for anyone?

I find the voice recognition to be really good actually. Never had many issues with it recognizing what I'm saying.

Well, you are using an alpha rom. What do you expect. On AOSP 4.1.1 roms Google Now & voice recognition work very well for me.
