It's not simply just the high price of the hardware too but all the accessories it requires. IMO, not including built in storage was a huge mistake. The second mistake was abandoning established memory card formats (SD and Memory Stick) for a completely proprietary card. Those things should have died out with the PS2. It's ludicrous to ask $100 for a 32gb card. Especially when you can buy a high performance 32gb SSD for almost half that.
The price of the games are comparable to the 3DS, though still much more expensive than iOS and Android games.
I think your comparison is a bit off. You should consider them against current flash memory such as SDHC cards, which based on a
search are between $30-60 for 32GB (SDHC Class 10). Although, I am curious how good the Vita cards are compared to SDHC. Are they considerably faster? Does it support higher capacities like SDXC does?
I had a 32GB card on pre-order, but I canceled it once Sony added an 8GB card to the 3G bundle. I was going to get a 3G bundle anyway, so now I'll just buy the larger card if I ever run out of space.
I actually think that Sony would do well to push a lot of the popular iOS games onto its console. It certainly has support for pretty much any game because the screen has capacitive touch support, and it's also considerably larger than an iPhone. There are a few games on my iPhone/iPad that I would definitely prefer
real joysticks for.
The biggest disappointment for me so far is that Sony announced that they will not have the whole "electronic UMD discount" thing in North America. It allows you to download software to your PSP, put a UMD in, and receive a discount on purchasing a digital copy of the game. I probably have about 12 or so UMDs, so it would be nice to be able to play them on the "better" handheld.
EDIT:
Amazon shipped my travel pouch... yay.
