A little while ago I was burrowing down into the earth through the back of my home, made it around 50-60 blocks down digging diagonally to create stairs back up. Knocked out a block and it was complete darkness behind it, but I could hear water running, so I hung up a torch, and was greeted to a giant waterfall cascading into a sizable underground river.
I dug my way sideways around to the other side of the waterfall and could hear moaning and rattling, so I figured there were some zombies and skeletons somewhere at the bottom. Then I saw 3 blocks of gold ore right by where the waterfall was hitting at the bottom. This is my first time seeing gold, I've heard it's useless for the moment, but I still wanted it, lol. So I dig around behind the waterfall and notice there's only a couple of points where the water is coming, so I figure I can block them, grab the gold, and then unblock them to bring back this kickass underground waterfall.
So I block them, throw down enough stone blocks to make a stairway to the bottom. Since I didn't see any skellies or zombies, I figured the noises must be coming from a chamber behind a wall somewhere and I'd be safe long enough to grab the gold and run.
The minute I hit the basin, 3 creepers came charging out of the darkness that the river was flowing into, scaring the hell out of me (I screamed a little, not gonna lie). I turned around, started jumping back up bricks, and almost made it far enough away to avoid the creeper igniting. Almost.
I hear the dreaded noise that all creepers make right before giving their life for evil, and suddenly he explodes and all my stairs are gone, along with most of the wall to the right of me. Luckily, I was wearing steel armor, so I only lost half my health. I turn around and while he took out one of the other two creepers when he blew up, the 3rd is still coming. So I run through the wall, queue up stone bricks and build as fast as I can until I've put most of a wall between me and last creeper. I was able to make my way back up to the top of the waterfall and back up the stairs to the main house, heal, and then I quit out for now until I can decide if I really want that gold or not. Pretty sure there's a spawner down there, so I can either go down and try to destroy it or leave good enough alone (but where's the fun in that?)
That's why this game is awesome. Played properly, 95% of the time you have this sense of isolation that I've never experienced in a game before, and 5% of the time you're getting the crap scared out of you by one of the 3-4 enemy types in the game (creepers are by far the worst IMO, although the skellies ranged attack is pretty deadly as well if you're not prepared for it.
Luckily this time I survived. I've put probably 20 hours into my house and digging into the mountains it's build into, digging tunnels to all 4 sides. Pretty soon I want to leave home and travel the world a bit, looking for dungeons outside of my mountain. I'm looking forward to seeing what N0tch adds to the game over time, hopefully some sort of leveling system, most baddies, and more weapons to craft. In it's current alpha form tho, I feel like I've gotten my $13 out of it 10 times over already, and I keep going back for more.
