You could always use sketchup. It is free and you can then sketch out 3D designs.

Yeah, you'll want to use the right tool for the material, both for speed to dig and durability of the tool.

Stone, coal, any type of ore = pickaxe
Gravel, clay, sand = shovel
wood = axe
sword = bad guys and neutral animals

Basically when you start you'll do a process like:

- Use your hand to break down trees - about 10 logs/2 trees worth
- Craft tree logs into wooden planks in your inventory
- Craft a workbench in inventory with four wooden planks
- Craft some sticks from wooden planks
- Craft a wooden pickaxe on your workbench using sticks and wood planks
- You can craft a wooden axe and/or shovel at this point, but might as well mine stone with the wooden pickaxe then use all stone from that point on.
- Find coal embedded in the stone and mine it with pickaxe (at least 1 block but a few is better). Mine some regular stone (20 blocks or so) too so you can create stone pickaxe, shovel, sword, and axe over the first night while in shelter
- Craft a torch using the coal and wooden stick
- Use a pickaxe to dig a small cave into a cliff wall for protection during the night. Close off all but one block. Light inside with torches. Remember to break down and bring your workbench from earlier inside so you can craft overnight.

Yeah I didn't try but I'm guessing if you use your hand to mine coal, it'll eventually break it down but you get no coal from it. That's an indicator that you are not using the right tool or right grade of tool for mining.

For example earlier I stumbled upon a couple blocks of gold. Since I don't have much iron ingots yet, I still dig with a stone pickaxe to save my iron one. I broke down the gold block and got nothing, then realized it was because I mined it with a stone pickaxe, which will break it down but not give you the gold ore from it. Need to use an iron or better for some blocks.

I am looking at another server where they restrict your building area unless you purchase more area with gold that you either mine or use other resources to purchase.

Kind of a more store type server and might try it out a bit between building here and see how it works since being able to build as much as you want can be a bit tiresome what with all the crap you can think of making.

Guys might want to try using different textures for the game since some look great.

Only problem is animated textures on lava / water and the fire you start other then from torches are not animated but it still looks great.

Finally got around to downloading this and messing around with it a bit. Just started digging downward until I heard some weird grunts and groans and think I caught a glimpse of a zombie. Got kind of freaked out so I high-tailed it out of there.

Seems like a fun game, though, will have to set aside a couple hours sometime to really play it.

I would suggest you place the settings on peaceful or easy until you get a bit ready with a safe shelter and supplies.

What Did We Learn Last Night?

And I will be cheating (Using Wiki and the net going forward), please read on.

Last night, I made a decision to expand my cave home and dig ever deeper. Looking for coal, iron and dare I say; Diamonds.
Dig dig dig.
Suddenly I hit a rock that is not able to be broken. BedRock? Wait. Center of the earth? Lava? I remember a tip from one of the videos I watched prior to purchase Lava=increased chance of diamond. Makes sense.
Center of earth. Heat and magma = Lava MUST be near.
I run back upstairs, forge 2 more iron pick axes and an iron shovel. Go back into the bowels of my lair. I am an earth smashing machine. I am collecting TONS of coal (missing in my world before) a bunch of red rock, that takes a really long time to mine (Have no friggin idea what it was) and needless to say crazy amounts of cobblestone and earth.
I must have looked like John Henry swinging a hammer, laying track. On screen all you saw was a BLUR of pickaxes and shovels. I came to this section of earth, load up my trusty shovel a plowed forth like a gopher. Nice reassuring "blip" noises confirm I am an earth moving machine and I am making my own HUGE cavern deep inside my world.

BLUE SCREEN. BUBBLES... DROWNING. GULPING NOISES. DEATH. RESPAWN STUFF LOST?

WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT? A time space continuim?
First time in 10 days I walked away from the game in disgust.
Theres no DROWNING in the center of the earth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ANY advice. Please feel free.

Well if you can get down there you can pick the stuff back up if it hasn't despawned.

But you need to make sure you don't dig into pools of lava or water when you get deep down and are ready to block it off with blocks.

Sorry guys, this HeyO server mod has some cool features but seems to be a lot unstable. Going to switch back to the stock server app for the time being until I can figure out why this keeps crashing, so no more warping for now

Update: Actually, for the time being, I'm going to just rip out the Llamacraft anti-griefing mod, see if that's causing issues. I'll keep an eye on it during the day today and see if the problem is still happening.

I wouldn't consider reading the Wiki cheating. When my coworker first showed me the game I had no friggin clue what to do or what I could do. He explained a few basics and how to craft basic things but if he hadn't I'd probably still be running around thinking "wtf do I do?".

Also just noticed a 2GB stick of RAM in the server went bad, so I had to pull it and replace it with a 1GB stick I had laying around. Could explain stability issues, I guess we'll see.
