Mods can be disabled with the click of a mouse.
Of course, but it's a bit silly to start with a giant mod pack and then only use a few of them. Unless, there's no other way to make a launcher you can link to for friends.

It's interesting though that Minecraft is moving towards small servers for groups of friends rather than large public servers. I guess this is mainly due to the removal of Bukkit from mods but Mojang itself seems to encourage small multiplayer setups with the Xbox and the sort of removal of a true SP Minecraft.

The reason for the focus on smaller servers is a result of several things. Mainly the fact that antigriefing for the normal admin is annoying, theres way too many ways to run minecraft servers, and the difficulty of getting your friends/playerbase to set it up like your mod. Mojang is killing their own game this way. The only reason it hasn't hit them at all is because minecraft is still becoming/is very successful (lol). I still see it getting picked up by friends at 25$, and no sales ever. It also doesn't need mods to be an amazing kid friendly game with hours of playtime.

Little off-topic, but this is why I see Minecraft as being an amazing business regardless of mod offerings, and will always be successful/profitable:

Legos. Fun, right? All kids love Legos, even some/most adults. Some kids can play Legos for 30 minutes and become bored and just don't enjoy them as much as others. Some can play with it for days, even years and never get bored; they find new ways to use the blocks. The point is, Legos aren't a love it/hate it relationship (unless your a parent, damn land mines). You can build anything you want with what they supply. Lego company adds new blocks every year and stops making certain blocks, so users keep having new items to drool over or build their ideas with. After a certain point, the lego company could just produce what they have and still have an AMAZING business. Legos, however, have to be MADE from plastic.

Minecraft, is a LOT like legos, except it has some HUGE advantages. One, its a one-time cost. you buy it once, and you get to have infinite fun. It's hardware (legos) vs software (Minecraft). Software takes nothing to make resource-wise but time, and plenty of users have time to make new stuff unlike in hardware where you need to actually craft the items. Two, it's like Legos in terms of kid-friendly: you can give your kids legos and not worry about much unless they are younger than 5-6 which is the lego-edible range. With minecraft, you don't even HAVE that issue. Three, it has a low startup cost. you can play minecraft on pretty much any newer pc without issues. 25$ is cheaper than most games for the DS, etc. that kids buy.

The moral of the story is Minecraft will never fail. Mojang could do NOTHING with the game, and it would still be profitable 10 years from now. Mods aren't important at all unless Mjoang wants more money. Money really isn't an issue at the moment, considering they don't even need sales to have waves of purchases related to a youtube video, etc. It's really the perfect storm of video games.

Finally found a game that both me and my little sister can enjoy. I remember trying Minecraft a while back and not lasting even one minute before quitting. I don't know what happened back then, but I am amazed at the depth of this game. It really is like digital Legos, you just let your imagination run wild.

For me the reason is because it's easier on small servers to tell people, "hey Mojang released 8 new versions this month, and bukkit (and other mods) aren't able to keep up, so I'm not going to upgrade the server until the next stable release of bukkit".

On larger servers I'm sure a lot of people would be expecting upgrades as soon as they are released, otherwise they have to keep clicking "No" at the update screen. Especially servers that have player dues/donations.

That is true, but that's improved quite a bit over the last year or so and especially since Mojang hired the Bukkit team. I think one time it was almost a month before I could upgrade the server to the new update but now it's down to about a week. Although, since having very public weekly builds, people do complain that there isn't stuff that just got added to the weekly build. They watched a youtube video of the new features and think that weekly builds are fine for public servers.

So, you know how pouring a bucket of water creates a never ending fountain? How do you stop/remove that water...?

When you pour a bucket of water, you now have an empty bucket. Just take that empty bucket, and right-click on the same block that you just poured the water on to scoop it up, refill the bucket, and stop it from flowing.

I actually wish the fluid dynamics worked more like they did in real life. So none of that never ending fountain and source block stuff.

It would be hard to have flowing water though. Similar to how terraria handled water with gravity, you could move it, but once the water got to lower land, it would just pool up. Unless there was a game mechanic to replenish it, like rain moving it around, that would be cool.

is there an official, unofficial MC server? My buddy and I are looking to play, most PVE. I totally suck at building stuff, it'd be nice to play with others i can learn from.

Considering picking it up on my tablet.... hmmm

The tablet version is OK to play with some friends but it has only a very tiny subset of what the full version has. There are no caves, electricity, NPC villages, minecarts just to name a few off the top of my head. It still has a long way to go until it becomes a proper "game". I have a good time playing it with my daughter but I have a feeling it would get old fast playing solo. There just isn't that much to do.

Not to spoil it too much, but you can just edit the inventory to give her unlimited amounts of what she wants. I know the first time I did an inventory hack it spoiled my first world that was all legit blocks. Now I have a few that are no cheating (sans peaceful mode) and a world that I use map editors and inventory hacks on. I also have some seed testing worlds that get cycled pretty frequently.
