Maybe it was an accident like in that video.

Anyway, I tried logging on at work to download the files and it said it couldn't connect. From past experience, this is probably a firewall issue I cannot work around. How big are your guys folders? Maybe it doesn't take to long anyway.

I can't seem to make torches...its just one stick and a piece of coal right? Is there a black stone that looks like coal I'm mixing up?

Nevermind, I was mixing flint up with it.

Found an interesting fluke. I dialed the view distance down to the lowest setting on my PowerBook and I could see through the game world. Allowed me to discover an existing large cave network. I dug down to it, saved my game and then dug my way back up on my desktop. Found my basecamp (still haven't done much with it, I turned off the monsters and am still scrounging for better resources) and then started a better dig down to it.

Hoping to find some cool stuff down there, what do I get from the blocks with red bits in them?

http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Redstone

Im more confused to do with...
http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Obsidian

...as I don't see any crafting stuff for it yet.
Besides that I've only seen 1 block of it before and I mined it thinking I might be able to do something with it...

Haven't seen any of that yet, but I have only been playing for a couple of days. Right now I am trying to figure out where to find more flint and iron ore. I am also building a giant 8*8*x tower for the fun of it.

You don't really do anything with obsidian. It's a very durable building material that resists explosions (TNT and creepers). Other than that, it has very little practical use.

Also, while obsidian occurs naturally, you can make it yourself by pouring a bucket of water on still lava.

Alright, so anyone else noticing creepy rumbling noises as you dig really deep? I have been digging these crazy deep staircases in my quest for more iron (dude, I have sooo little, its crazy!) and I notice, every 10 minutes or so, a deep rumbling noise, like from some cheesy scifi original movie 'They dug too deep and awoke something terrible! The MegaMagmaSharkTopus!!!'

Also, found another, even larger network of caves, redstone, gold, iron, and a metric ass-ton of coal. Seriously, between the cobblestones and coal, I could recreate Pre-Industrial Era London.

OMG that was so funny. I only learned of this game like 20 minutes ago watching some videos on it. Then watching that video burn the dude's house down was so funny I was almost crying.

"Uhh, wait... uh oh"

I think I need to setup my Paypal still but I'll probably pick it up today. I don't get all the versions listed on the Wiki. There's like Classic, Survival, Adventure, Alpha, infdev, indev... seriously wtf?

I heard from watching a video that the creepy music plays when you get close to a dungeon/monster spawn, which generally occur deep so that's why you hear them digging down.

This guy came across a dungeon full of spiders which killed him. Then he tried to drown them with a water source but that didn't work. Then he tried to destroy the spawn box but it doesn't seem like you can.

I've been obsessed with this game for the past couple days. It's in Alpha mode right now but I guess Beta is coming very soon.

And as duragezic said, holy fuck that house burning video is hilarious. Sucks for him, but goddamn it's funny.

That's good to know about the music. I'll have to go looking for it each time if that's the case. You can destroy the spawn box, as I did so with the only spawn (also a spider) I've found so far. I think I used a stone pickaxe, but I can't remember exactly which tool I used. I was hoping I could move it, but it went bye-bye.

Dang, that's pretty creepy. I'll have to keep that in mind now when I'm digging.

The first moment you're digging and start hearing the zombie / spider / creeper noises while you're waay underground is awesome. You have no idea when you're going to bump into them or how, but you can hear them.

This is why I'm not straying too far away from my building. I guess it also helps that my house is built next to that huge castle on the AT server, so it's actually pretty hard to miss. In fact, my house is gradually turning into a skyscraper. I started it last night and it has like six stories now, and I can't... stop... building onto it. :|

It took me a while, but I am finally addicted. I think online play is what triggered it. I simply don't have as much fun when I'm by myself, but when I'm on a server with a handful of other people and we can check out each other's creations, it's fantastic. I'm seriously hooked and all I want to do when I get home is play more Minecraft. Gah.

EDIT: I'm also excited because I dug down really deep today, and found some Redstone, which is the first valuable material I've come across. Unfortunately I don't have the necessary tools for mining it.

As someone else suggested, drop torches Hansel & Gretel style.

The large cave network has a twin, the place is gigantic, so easy to get lost in. I went through easily 100-150 torches just lighting the place, and every time I turned a corner I found more cave. Plus there is a ton of obsidian down there.

To get flint mine(use a shovel) gravel (http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Gravel). You don't one every time but you'll have a good chance of it.

As far as Iron goes, find a large cave network; one that will end up leading to lava at some point. I generally find a ton that way.
