Rockyct; is your server 'traditional' in the sense that all buildings need to be made from mined materials, or do admins regularly give out items to players?
Well, I'm the main admin. There's another admin but he's mainly just underground building a rail system the whole time he's in.

In general, yes, I give stuff out. However, I'm really only giving out the random stuff that's hard to find in game or just impossible because there are no animals/mobs. I also have dirt/sand/cobblestone in public chests because it's not that valuable and very boring if you had to collect sand all day to make a glass tower.

I'm trying to find a middle ground on what to give out. Or, I might install an economy plugin so people can buy stuff they need.

I'd like to be added to the list of people who can leave the bubble. Just bought the game a few days ago, really digging it so far.

I want to build something big, but I want to do it all by hand. If I do it in a server, then I get tempted to cheat and ask for or spawn items myself. But If I do it in single player, nobody else ever sees it, and there's still fall damage and no /sethome.

If you're using Win7 64bit, have made sure you're using 64bit version of java, and still getting black screens, try making a new shortcut and adding this entire line in the text box where you locate the .exe to launch (be sure to fix install location):

Code:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe" -Xmx512M -Xms512M -cp "C:\[YOUR INSTALLATION LOCATION]" net.minecraft.LauncherFrame

Works well for me, thanks.

I built a 35*107*15 block greenhouse, housing 180 trees, 3 layers of catwalks, and all glass walls and ceilings.

I all the incredibly hard work, which included but was not limited to, flattening 2 mountains, terracing the remainders, grading the rest of the land, mining the materials (I used stone and not cobblestone, so I needed smelters to convert them back), and put up about a third of the glass. All said and told, about 4000-5000 blocks of glass were needed.

Then Krakn gave me the oh so sexy mod powers, and I went from having approximately 2-3 more weeks of work (especially since I opted to switch the two existing catwalks from wood to iron, and added a third) to about 2-3 days. Even with the fact that I could just give myself anything I wanted, it still took quite a bit of time to lay it out and make sure it was symmetrical and appealing.

I was starting on a 1:1 (ish, I fudged the numbers a little to work with solid blocks) Los Angeles Class submarine to sit in the lake next to the greenhouse. That would have been 110*11*11 (actual numbers, 110*10*10)

I played the game for the first time in about a month or so last night. It was during the day when I logged on, and I was in my wooden house (first time I have built a wooden house, in my previous 2 games, I built into a mountain or hill).

I decided to go out and check out the area, so I went and killed some cows and pigs, then found a cave not far from my house (which is in the middle of a small island, so I need to swim to shore for any outside type supplies) I went in and found 24 blocks of iron. By the time I was done it was the middle of night. I got bored of waiting rather quickly so I went out of the cave and wasted about 30 arrows killing a spider and skeleton, since I was way out of practice.

On the way back home, I found three squids, and killed them for ink sacs. also got 3 bones from skeletons. I'm going to have to figure out what to do with those later.

I am actually out of coal, so I guess next time I play I will do some searching for coal. Maybe I will dig out my mine under my house to find some.

haha, pretty much. you can dig a 2x1 column so it's a bit safer though. that reduces the efficiency quite a bit.
Well, as long as you don't go below a certain level you'll probably be ok from lava too. Although, you can't find diamonds above the lava level. Sometimes I'll essentially do strip mining based on efficiency. I'll make tunnels with three blocks in between. You'll miss some vertical veins in the block in the middle that you can't see, but you make up for it with efficiency. I'm usually going for diamonds so I'll try to do that between layers 9 to 16.

Is everyone using bukkit now these days? Or is still under development.
I use it. The biggest problem is that new builds often break plugins. I'm running a fairly old build (3 weeks old), but it's all running fine so I don't want to break it with a new build.

Logged on to rockyct's server for the first time tonight. Only a couple people on, but I liked the layout of it.

Thanks for approving me, rockyct.

No problem, thanks for joining. Sorry I couldn't stay in for long. I'm on my four year old laptop working on a project on campus. I'm just glad I had the console window open so I could approve you right then.

I tried using Bukkit, but plugins still seem busted for me. For now I'm using an unofficial hMod release, which works well for what I need.

Update today.

"Wood and logs don't burn forever anymore (confirm?)" ...I can confirm this one. My fiery pillars have all extinguished. :'(

"Delay/repeater blocks (confirm?)"

I know it was a glitch, but I really liked how logs would burn forever.. Notch should add a material that does burn forever.

BTW, those images are freaking 8MB a piece they take forever to load (even on my 20Mbit connection), and they also cause my browser to lag every time that I scroll over them. It would be great if you could just link to them because I really don't need to wait for them to load every time someone comments on this thread.

Personally, I disable embedded images in the user CP. I figure it's best practice for at work. :sneaky:
