Am I the only one who misses the old days of Minecraft when multiplayer servers weren't modded to Oblivion and where protecting your own items would require some actual ingenuity, not some server provided lock feature?
I spent a while looking for a server kinda like that a while back. I want a server where I can show off my cool build that I worked hard at, and not have it overshadowed by a guy spawning gold blocks and building a gold and diamond tower. Spawning items takes away from the satisfaction of building something awesome.

That's why one of my friends started hosting his own vanilla, no-mods, no-plugins, no-bullshit server just for us. It's professionally hosted for cheap, and it's on a good connection, with virtually no lag or slowdowns. It's awesome. It's survival mode with no cheats and building huge structures is so much more rewarding.
Minecraft is currently 1.8.1. "1.9" will end up being the gold release, which is actually November 18 (to coincide with MineCon in Vegas).

Our server started a new map in 1.8 to make use of the new biome layout. Snow biomes are still broken though.
So the "upcoming features" are the ones that are coming in 1.0?
The "eventual features" will be added later then? So they will keep adding patches and updates, even after the 18th? Will these be released for the 360 as well?
Well I must admit that I do like being able to use /home. What I would like is if they added teleporters. They could be really expensive to make or require rare materials, but it would be a cool way of incorporating /home without a mod. They could even add some restrictions, like once it's place it can't be moved without destroying it, so it can't be abused, or make it use some type of material from your inventory every time you use it.
Or at least make the compass point to your bed instead of the original spawn. Or make 2 compasses, one points to your bed, the other points to the original spawn.
I'm actually a bit more worried about 1.0 and a stable bukkit version. To me, it seems like Notch has been duct taping on new features over the last year. If he's actually working on an overhaul of minecraft, it could change a lot from the prereleases.1.9 pre 5 is as close as you are going to get to the actual release, and bukkit and most texture packs and client/server mods are already working fine on them. I just hope they don't change it in the 1.0 release so that you can't use offline mode. It's so much quicker direct connecting than logging in through minecraft.net, and you can use whatever name you want, you aren't limited to finding a unique name amongst 3 million other accounts.

You may as well get started figuring the server stuff out now. Bukkit usually takes anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks to release after an update. There are some big changes in MC 1.0, but I don't think there will be anything fundamentally different in terms of server stuff from the beta. Who knows though? Supposedly they've been in a feature freeze since the middle of October as the month before release is just an overall clean up of the game. I suppose they could have reworked SMP quite a bit but that would only mean that Bukkit could take weeks to update.
It's a feature freeze, but he's still working on the code. He's described it as fixing bugs and cleaning up. There's actually a release candidate coming out soon followed by the release on the 18th. I think we'll be lucky if we see a recommended bukkit build by the 23rd.I'm pretty sure after pre 5 there was a code freeze (just a couple of weeks ago), so I doubt much has changed since then. I don't think there is going to be much of an overhaul done to the code for 1.0.
My server has been running pre 5 since the day bukkit had a snapshot for it, and it's been pretty stable. All of the animal functions work fine, the leveling up works, strongholds exist, biomes appear to be working correctly, etc...
The only issues I've had with bukkit 1.9 pre releases are minor ones (earlier pre 5 releases the chests didn't make noise, there were some issues with a couple of addons, a couple of other little issues...). The latest pre bukkit stable snapshot I'm using now (#25 I think) seems to be working fine so far. I could be wrong, but I don't think there will be much change from this, and if there isn't bukkit and most addons will probably work fine right at release, if not within a day or two.
IC2/BC or any other mods than Bukkit are a bitch to run. You have to make sure you download the correct mod packs, mod loader, client fixes, etc. for both the server and the client. That means instructing users exactly what files they need to download and exactly how to install it. Distributing the minecraft.jar in any form is a violation of Mojang's ToC so you can't really pass it out other than some close friends.
Also, since it's not using Bukkit, you have almost no server utilities like the Essentials pack. I only have a server up between my close group of friends as you have to completely trust them to behave.
I still go back and play every few months, and I expect to do it for many years to come. The thread needs to be renamed to "Who's STILL playing Minecraft?!"

Lots of people are.
It's been almost a year and a half now since I first started, and I still play multiple times a week, sometimes almost everyday. It's a real testament to the game's value when I have 200+ games in my Steam library and yet Minecraft still keeps me coming back on a regular basis. The replay value is an order of magnitude greater than most other games.
Yeah, I know that. It's at over 4 million registered users now, so I'd say quite a few people are still playing. They are also working with the educational system as well. A lot of schools are purchasing the game under their edu program and using it to teach children different building / creativity concepts as well as build collaboration skills.
Pretty impressive considering the completed game hasn't even been released yet.
