Boy was that mission bugged. To start off with, all the time we were on the second level, the ceiling kept on flipping on, giving me only a wire view of my soldiers and no real view of the terrain.

Then, the computer should flip focus onto the soldier who's turn is starting. Only it never does. This wouldn't be a bad thing, except in this mission. Because with the ceiling constantly flipping on, it makes it really hard to figure out which soldier I am controlling at the time.

Then, the computer couldn't figure out if I wanted to move the soldier to the adjacent square or all the way across the board, down the stairs and back to the adjacent square down below. So I literally was excluded from certain otherwise legal moves merely because the computer couldn't figure it out. I am guessing that it was doing this because it had trouble figuring out if it was supposed to have the wall on or off next to the square.

And the pathing is really wonky in certain scenarios. And you can't adjust it at all. Oh, and then my sniper must have had an epic fail role on one of her shots because instead of shooting the bad guy, she blew away her own cover, leaving her out in the open while the enemy took pot shots at her. Not cool.

For an otherwise excellent game, I felt like that mission was a pre-alpha build. I did NOT expect that level of crap in this game.

So I was doing an abduction mission and things went bad. Only two of my original 5 were alive so I decided to abort the mission and get the hell out of there. I run my 2 remaining soldiers back to the mission start and there was no extraction zone or skyranger! I ran around the entire map and there was no extraction zone, so eventually a cyberdisk killed my last two soldiers.

Is this a bug or are some missions just like that for added challenge on classic mode?

Not sure. I went after the base a little too early (july?) and tried to pull my guys out and there was no extraction zone in normal. got my squad wiped by 8 mutons and a berzerker all at once. got pinned down and couldn't keep under cover. Playing iron man. Debating restarting whole game or just grinding through a bit to build back a decent squad. Probably will stick with it, just hard losing like 80 kills worth of experience all in one mission.

I encountered my first bug today. I was up on the second level of my first downed large ship. Every time the camera changed, say to go to another soldier, it would draw back above the ceiling and block my view. So I spent most of the mission looking at ceiling and wire frames of my soldiers.

If you scroll down, I find you can force you way through the building. Inconvenient, but better than looking at the roof of the UFO.

I have a complaint! I just started playing last night and noticed you can manually select the soldiers you want to maneuver, the sequence/order of moving the soldiers are pre-selected! Or is that just in the early tutorials?

You get complete freedom, at least later on. Each soldier's two movement options can be mixed-and-matched as you please.

That's only in the tutorials.

Yeah, I eventually figured that out. But every time the camera moves, it goes right back to the way it was. Damn annoying.

I am not sure 'Complete' freedom. Yes, you can select your soldiers in order. but if you use the 'Next' soldier button, the game seems pretty set on the order it wants you to go in. And will default back to the one it wants next. Not the next in the sequence. And it does the same if you merely finish that soldier's actions for the round. It goes to the soldier it wants.

My first terror mission on classic was 4 rookies and my only surviving officer (who died). Somehow all 4 rookies made it, although 3 were gravely wounded.

I have been making it a point to take a lower ranks with me on every mission. Groom them for some action later on. In one terror mission I faced, the Rook actually out shot most of his 'Betters'. He is now a fairly decent sniper.

So, I have been holding off on attacking the base. I take it that is a key milestone? Anything I should be prepared for before going in?

Just got brutalized in a classic ironman game.

It was a simple mission. Landed small scout on the third month. Sent in my crew of five veterans and a rookie. We're fully loaded up with beam weapons and carapace armor. Take down a cyberdisk without getting touched and my heavy puts a shredder rocket into three Mutons. They go down easily, but my heavy is taken down to one HP. Heal him back up to nine and proceed to the saucer.

Three Mutons inside and immediately one of them crits my heave for 9. He's dead. My support Major is laying down fire and my sniper is firing using squad sight. Rookie and assault moves up to the back door. Bam, support Major gets crit'ed and goes down bleeding. Sniper can't hit a barn door. My other medic races over to the downed major. Bam, crit and killed. One shot. Assault and rookie are firing in from behind missing everything and the Outsider pops. Sniper finally kills a muton. Rookie gets killed and assault kills another Muton from the door. Now I have two soldiers left.

Then the Muton suppresses my assault and the Outsider and a lone repair drone start circling around. I run & gun around the Outsider into full cover, using lightning reflexes to avoid the suppression. Outsider is down. All I need to do is survive one hit from a Muton. Nope. 12 point damage shot. Now only the sniper is left.

Miraculously, the sniper assaults the final (wounded) muton and beam drone with his laser pistol and kills them both (pistolero for the win). Four officers and a rookie dead. Only officer left is my sniper and he's wounded. My barracks has only two enlisted men and two rookies. I order another 6 soldiers but a terror mission pops the next day. Then I find that my third Sat Uplink needs 30!! engineers to build and I won't be able to build one this month.

And that was pretty much game.

Try rearranging how your soldiers loaded into the Skyranger?

Classic Ironman game... I finally got a handle on the aliens after having many touch and go months... having no less than 3 complete squad wipes early in the game, including one where I lost not a few captains and escaped with a single, heavily injured heavy (gravely wounded...), and at one point having a single "veteran" - a heavy sergeant and 5 rookies... vs a very difficult terror mission D: I don't know how I managed to save 11 civilians that mission.

I got careless. I'm rocking a full plasma, titan/ghost/archangel armour team, got a full roster of colonels if I need them. Then what do I do? I wake up a bunch of chrysalids on my last move with my sniper on high ground... they jump up and surround my sniper on the reaction move. Chop chop, chop chop... sniper zombie on the roof of a supply ship D: Whoops.

Thankfully, it's a sniper I don't really care about since she had 2x battle wounds and had very poor willpower (42.... as a COLONEL). Alas, she was the last member of the original crew. Littered by the wayside of dozens and dozens of her fellow soldiers, she finally bit the dust (or shall I say, was bitten BY FREAKING CHRYSALIDS). Only 8 kills short of an even hundred. Time to level up another sniper in your place.

The base assault itself is pretty easy, but it's probably worth researching as much as you can before hitting it and maximizing your investment in your financial infrastructure (satellites). After the assault, you can spend most of your money on gearing your troops to the gills.

Best to level up the rookies only after you get Iron Will and have pre-selected them in the Psi Lab.

Trying to figure out how this game ranks missions.. I have used my save game 2X.. i was stuck with 3 Very difficult abduction missions, saved and took the one with the rewards i wanted. Came in on a Raised Freeway level (level i hate most) moved up.. soon crysths (4 and also 3 thin men, and 3 mutons) are zombie'ing everything.. NO i was not to slow, the game just had stuff spaced great for the enemy. I had at least 2 enemies for each squad member.. and the luck of the roll was against me (you know, the point blank miss).. squad wipe.. reload save take same mission and there where 6 total aliens? 3 thin men and 3 mutons.. how are these two missions alike? both rated very difficult, same level, just different enemies..

man this game can be so frustratingly fun. I'm taking a break or i will go nutz.

I'm seeing an issue where a captured alien will not give up the same weapon that the game shows them having in the fight.

For example, if I'm fighting Thin Men and I kill one of them, the game will say Thin Man Plasma Rifle exploded or thereabouts. Then I capture his comrade and then I will only get a Light Plasma Rifle.

Is it possible that the enemies have different weaponry even within the same class? If so, how do I tell what weapons they have? I can't identify them visually yet.

EDIT: Or perhaps the Thin Man never has the plasma rifle and the game is just mis-reporting it? In the same battle, the game said that the Mutons had light plasma rifles, and I thought they always had plasma rifles.

thin men have light plasma rifles. Pretty sure only mutons have plasma rifles, maybe floaters but not sure.

The difficulty is simply the number of aliens on the mission.

I'm pretty sure sectoids always have pistols, and thin men always have carbines. I think I've seen mutons with carbines, rifles, and heavy plasma.

If this is the case then the game is misreporting the weapon upon kill.

I noticed this also ,it says "plasma rifle explodes" not "light plasma rifle" explodes, but still you see in the cutscenes its a light plasma rifles mayve they where trying to be less verbous . I love the light plasma though give a rookie a light plasma and a scope and hes good to go

I think only muton elites have heavy plasma. I don't think I've seen a normal muton with heavy plasma...

Yea, the first things you want to spend money on is workshops and uplinks. Don't neglect your workshops and grab engineers whenever you can. (without causing countries to defect of course)

I recently downed an overseer in classic. I took 3 supports because I figured I would catch me an ethereal. A sgt and a cpt stunner and a colonel medic who has mind control, a colonel sniper with mind control, a colonel heavy suppressor with 2 rockets and a low rank heavy who just got shredder rockets.

Everyone has titan armor and plasma weapons.

Killed 3 or so groups of mutons outside, they were mixed, some elites and berzerkers and normals. Made it inside and it was quiet, too quiet. a surviving wounded muton pops around a corner and reaction fire takes him out, and several walls. inside are an ethereal, 3 elite mutons, a few heavy floaters and 2 sectopod tanks of doom. It didn't go so well, those sectopods hurt, and they can fire their main weapon twice, and always seem to be able to make a reaction shot with their little plasma turret.

I think late game Thin Men might get upgraded to plasma rifles, but not 100% sure on that.
