So I was doing an abduction mission and things went bad. Only two of my original 5 were alive so I decided to abort the mission and get the hell out of there. I run my 2 remaining soldiers back to the mission start and there was no extraction zone or skyranger! I ran around the entire map and there was no extraction zone, so eventually a cyberdisk killed my last two soldiers.
Is this a bug or are some missions just like that for added challenge on classic mode?
I encountered my first bug today. I was up on the second level of my first downed large ship. Every time the camera changed, say to go to another soldier, it would draw back above the ceiling and block my view. So I spent most of the mission looking at ceiling and wire frames of my soldiers.
You get complete freedom, at least later on. Each soldier's two movement options can be mixed-and-matched as you please.I have a complaint! I just started playing last night and noticed you can manually select the soldiers you want to maneuver, the sequence/order of moving the soldiers are pre-selected! Or is that just in the early tutorials?

If you scroll down, I find you can force you way through the building. Inconvenient, but better than looking at the roof of the UFO.

I had too attack the Alien Base with my stock equipment on classic just now to stop three countries from leaving the conscul .....yeeesh took a long time and I accendly killed the commander but Ill take it ....no one died
My first terror mission on classic was 4 rookies and my only surviving officer (who died). Somehow all 4 rookies made it, although 3 were gravely wounded.
I am not sure 'Complete' freedom. Yes, you can select your soldiers in order. but if you use the 'Next' soldier button, the game seems pretty set on the order it wants you to go in. And will default back to the one it wants next. Not the next in the sequence. And it does the same if you merely finish that soldier's actions for the round. It goes to the soldier it wants.
So, I have been holding off on attacking the base. I take it that is a key milestone? Anything I should be prepared for before going in?
Best to level up the rookies only after you get Iron Will and have pre-selected them in the Psi Lab.I have been making it a point to take a lower ranks with me on every mission. Groom them for some action later on. In one terror mission I faced, the Rook actually out shot most of his 'Betters'. He is now a fairly decent sniper.

Trying to figure out how this game ranks missions.. I have used my save game 2X.. i was stuck with 3 Very difficult abduction missions, saved and took the one with the rewards i wanted. Came in on a Raised Freeway level (level i hate most) moved up.. soon crysths (4 and also 3 thin men, and 3 mutons) are zombie'ing everything.. NO i was not to slow, the game just had stuff spaced great for the enemy. I had at least 2 enemies for each squad member.. and the luck of the roll was against me (you know, the point blank miss).. squad wipe.. reload save take same mission and there where 6 total aliens? 3 thin men and 3 mutons.. how are these two missions alike? both rated very difficult, same level, just different enemies..
man this game can be so frustratingly fun. I'm taking a break or i will go nutz.
I'm seeing an issue where a captured alien will not give up the same weapon that the game shows them having in the fight.
For example, if I'm fighting Thin Men and I kill one of them, the game will say Thin Man Plasma Rifle exploded or thereabouts. Then I capture his comrade and then I will only get a Light Plasma Rifle.
Is it possible that the enemies have different weaponry even within the same class? If so, how do I tell what weapons they have? I can't identify them visually yet.
EDIT: Or perhaps the Thin Man never has the plasma rifle and the game is just mis-reporting it? In the same battle, the game said that the Mutons had light plasma rifles, and I thought they always had plasma rifles.
If this is the case then the game is misreporting the weapon upon kill. The difficulty is simply the number of aliens on the mission.
I'm pretty sure sectoids always have pistols, and thin men always have carbines. I think I've seen mutons with carbines, rifles, and heavy plasma.

Just got brutalized in a classic ironman game.
It was a simple mission. Landed small scout on the third month. Sent in my crew of five veterans and a rookie. We're fully loaded up with beam weapons and carapace armor. Take down a cyberdisk without getting touched and my heavy puts a shredder rocket into three Mutons. They go down easily, but my heavy is taken down to one HP. Heal him back up to nine and proceed to the saucer.
Three Mutons inside and immediately one of them crits my heave for 9. He's dead. My support Major is laying down fire and my sniper is firing using squad sight. Rookie and assault moves up to the back door. Bam, support Major gets crit'ed and goes down bleeding. Sniper can't hit a barn door. My other medic races over to the downed major. Bam, crit and killed. One shot. Assault and rookie are firing in from behind missing everything and the Outsider pops. Sniper finally kills a muton. Rookie gets killed and assault kills another Muton from the door. Now I have two soldiers left.
Then the Muton suppresses my assault and the Outsider and a lone repair drone start circling around. I run & gun around the Outsider into full cover, using lightning reflexes to avoid the suppression. Outsider is down. All I need to do is survive one hit from a Muton. Nope. 12 point damage shot. Now only the sniper is left.
Miraculously, the sniper assaults the final (wounded) muton and beam drone with his laser pistol and kills them both (pistolero for the win). Four officers and a rookie dead. Only officer left is my sniper and he's wounded. My barracks has only two enlisted men and two rookies. I order another 6 soldiers but a terror mission pops the next day. Then I find that my third Sat Uplink needs 30!! engineers to build and I won't be able to build one this month.
And that was pretty much game.
