So I played one public match and two matches with my friend in a private match.

The public match went without a hitch, but both matches my friend was extremely buggy and the second one crashed entirely. I'm not sure if there's something wrong on his end because my game runs perfectly fine; he stated he couldn't even move his soldier's using the mouse.

Thanks to whoever recommended iron man mode, didnt even know about it before coming on here. It makes the game that much more fun with the actual risk of losing your best soldiers. Plus i think its better to lose and then start all over again, rather than continue a path that is possibly doomed anyway.

Currently Im at a point where im lacking in alloys and elerium, and without it, my weapons and armor are in need of an upgrade. Every UFO that i shoot down is a super size one and its a challenge to complete the misson = no materials. Too bad because i have more money/scientists/engineers than i know what to do with, but im lacking in materials.

And does anyone know if there is an "unequip all" shortcut? I hate having to strip all my guys of the good weapons every time i want to put a new group in.

Unfortunately, I am having the reverse opinion of Iron Man. Although I keep on playing Classic/Iron Man, I am getting more and more frustrated with the game as a whole. I have already had to prematurely end 5 separate games due to unsustainability of several key aspects.

Now, admittedly, each successive game has left me with more knowledge and a plan of action on how to not make the same mistake again, it has also allowed me to identify several key flaws in the way the AI is programmed. I'll not share my findings as they will invariably be refuted by those who want to claim negatives are reactionary in nature rather than fact based.

yeah, it's a good game. And i appreciate how far it has come and the direction that the developers took. it is my hope that, should there be an expansion or a sequel, that they fix some of the grosser issues that hold the game back from being GREAT.

There is no such option. Yes, we all wish for it desperately.

Just like we wish for some kind of "all overwatch" option. This game really should've been more script friendly.

Lol, the idea of a script friendly console game.

The DLC is out today and the cost is $7. Here's the trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4lARJVQAmE

I'll pick it up when its on sale since I want to play through X-Com again but have some other games to get through first (BG:EE, FC3, Skyrim Dragonborn). The DLC itself doesn't interest me enough to play again but I enjoyed the game so I don't mind picking it up for my next playthrough.

I wouldn't bother with the DLC. Upon reading it, people are suggesting it worsens the playthrough rather than improving it.

This is a valuable read from a big fan of the game, and his absolute disappointment with this DLC:

It's a good read. Thanks for the link.

As far as I am concerned, they lost me about the point where you don't get any new aliens or weapons or technology or even new random battlegrounds. What exactly am I paying for?

I'd have much preferred if they had spent their programming time and energy on fixing some of the game breaking bugs in the game. Only then they wouldn't be making any more money. More's the shame.

Thanks for the link, I'll probably avoid it. I have no interest in a chinese triad storyline (where did they even come up with that idea for an X-Com game?) and the bulk of the content (3 missions) lasts only an hour or so. Why didn't they just do the obvious dlc where you get to play as the aliens?

Has anyone else been keeping up on Xenonauts? Any thoughts on how it will (eventually) compare?

kind of unrelated question: I know civilization and xcom are both turn based strategy games both made by fraxis, but how similar are they? For the most part, if you love xcom, do you also like civ too?

Ive tried RTS games in the past, but havent really gotten into any yet. I tried civ 5 out a while ago, but didnt really give it a chance before moving on to something else. I felt the same way about xcom for part of the beginning (thought it was too slow), but eventually i ended up really liking it.

I think i kinda just got overwhelmed at first by civ, whereas xcom introduces things gradually and im guessing probably isnt as deep as civ.

Civ is a 4X game, and XCOM isn't really that genre. The games aren't very similar really.

Edit: I realise that I didn't go into detail, but it is hard to compare the two games, because they aren't very similar at all. Civ games have no tactical combat, while XCOM is based on tactical combat. Civ games are about building up an empire, exploring the world, and interacting with other empires. None of those mechanics are present in XCOM. It is really difficult for me to compare the two games, as they are completely different genres.

As was already stated, Civilization is a different type of game (4X). Xcom is squad based tactical turn based combat. So it really depends on what elements of Xcom you enjoyed.

The number of squad based turn based tactical combat games out there is pretty small. What I was enjoying playing in anticipation of Xcom was Temple of Elemental Evil. It is also turn based and probably a good deal closer to Xcom than Civilization. Another game of that nature is Fallout Tactics. neither game is "New" but both are worth looking into. (Make sure you get the Co8.org patch for ToEE if you go that route). Also, check out Xenonauts which is another attempt at bringing back the original Xcom. it is an indie game currently in development and who knows when it will actually be released. Also, Wasteland 2 "Might" be along those lines as well (unless someone knows something that I don't).

If you simply are looking for turn based strategy, I would put in a pitch in for Galactic Civilizations 2. it is a 4X game like Civilization and massively fun to play. Very addicting. There are some other 4X games out there as well if that is what you are looking for.

I get the feeling the big brains behind this game have moved on to other projects, and this DLC was thought up by someone second rate; it just feels too inconsistent next to the level of thought that went behind this game. I hope I'm wrong though, because that would imply a bad future in terms of patching these bugs.

I'd agree that this looks to have been an attempt at stimulating revenue stream rather than actually adding to the content of the game. Not necessarily because it has a different feel (different authors can have different takes on a subject), but because it doesn't really ADD much in the way of content. Either way, yeah. Not going to get my money on this one.

There is a coupon (check slick deals) that allows you to get it for $20 on gamefly. To be honest I would rate this game a 7.5; it was ok (I played through twice) and it could have been truely great but wasn't. Some aspects were just too streamline and the maps were mostly lame. I mean they started out good but as the game progressed I would like for them to have changed and become more something; complex? twist? something that added to the strategic value. Also the base building and space combat aspects of the game could have been greatly improved. Mind you I've not played any other x-com game so I'm not comparing this game to some other 'mythical' game I played years ago. In many ways I find fallen enchantress a better strategy game (and I don't think it is a great game either).
-
I just can't put my finger on it - maybe it is as others have said it was 'dumb down' for the consoles but I think it is deeper than that; I think the lead designer made some bad decisions; the code (engine) seems ok - oh well whatever.

What are people playing now? It looks like posting on Xcom seems to have stopped or at least slowed to a crawl. So what are you guys playing now?

Why? I am asking in essence, why people stopped posting on this thread.

There's nothing new going on with the game. DLC doesn't look good, and there's no details on the next one.

Personally, I may go back to Ironman impossible, but AC3 and Killing Floor Xmas event beckons.

I've been playing the Heart of the Swarm beta. For a while at least Amazon was giving out beta keys with a pre-order. The Xcom DLC really didn't pan out, I was hoping for something that enhanced the strategic layer of the game. Instead it sounds like basically more of the same.

Post new-game shock. Especially notable with popular franchises. People buy a game, like it, put 100 hours into it, then burn out and play something else.

I picked up dishonored via the green man gaming black friday sale and am currently playing/replaying it.
