I too caved and pre-ordered. Amazon was offering a gift card if you did and since I am a HUGE Amazon purchaser, WIN.

Interesting. If you purchase a digital copy, it's only $45. If you purchase a physical copy, it's $60, but then they give you a $15 gift card.

Might as well just save that $15 right now and buy the digital version.

So are the missions pregenerated? With the original, you could literally keep on taking mission after mission for as long as you liked.

I got suckered into pre-ordering Diablo 3 before it came out. I really hope I don't get burned like I did on that occasion. But the (pre)views and game play videos seem to suggest it will be good.

If you watched the video, the dev says there are like 80 different missions and each mission has a few variations. They have an algorithm to make it all random, so each play through the missions you get and order you get them is going to be different. So even if you and I both played the game the same way and picked the same options for things we would get different missions.

Yeah, it is six of one and half a dozen of the other. But i am pretty old school and prefer to have a CD/DVD to go along with my purchase. In the end it may not make 'That much' difference, but it is the little things in life.

Plus it tricks/incents me to purchase more books and DVDs from Amazon.

Looks like the reviews have all been very positive so far, however, I'm going to wait for a steam sale on this game. Game reviews have gotten out of hand with their enthusiasm as of late for games that end up being mediocre at best...Civ5 anyone?

Yea, I don't blame you. For Civ5, I had Civ4 to fall back on. This game I'm pretty desperate to have turn out good so I went for it.

LOL. I allow myself to be kidded into believing that I actually "Own" something out of the bargain. It's all an illusion, I know. But hey. Worst possible scenario, I end up with another coaster to go along with my D3 coaster.

A new turn-based version of the original UFO/X-COM games?

This will be the first time I've said this about a game for a long time:

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!

LOL.

Been playing ToEE lately. I feel certain that it was originally designed by someone who loved Xcom. The isometric top down view and the turn based combat are very reminiscent of the Xcom series.

I caved after the demo myself. Looking forward to playing it tonight. The demo was pretty short, but so was the demo for the original if anyone remembers. Plus the original demo had you plopped down in the middle of a terror mission without any guidance, and gave me a bad impression of it.

If Firaxis do a good job with this game, I think I'll have to send them a box of chocolates or something. In the meantime I might crank up UFO: Enemy Unknown again, even though I'm fairly sure I completed it in the last twelve months.

Man I am in a bind... I know someone who is selling Euro key with TF2 and Civ 5 preorder bonus for $35. But my att dsl bandwidth is pretty low at 150 and i am at 65% mark so even if I got the key I won;t be able to download it till the cycle reset in like 2 weeks. He claim the key will work fine for NA. On the other hand, the amazon preorder with 15 credit is nice too and I don;t need to worry about the bandwidth... what do u guys think?

In one of the gameplay interviews I watched, one of the devs said there was 80 maps and those maps also had variations so they wouldn't play the same. It came up in the interview funny enough because the dude doing the interview was like I played this map before! lol

Well, I think I'll start on Classic but not Iron Man. Normal just gave me a vibe that it's honestly too easy. I'm a seasoned OG vet and have kept up on all the coverage so have a good idea of what's going on. At least this way on my first run through I won't throw the whole game on a squad wipe.

Try restarting steam and see if that works.

The game is fun and it brings back lots of memories of older TB games I loved back in the day. Now if Firaxis would do a update to Alpha Centauri I'd be in heaven.

Gametrailers review is absolutely glowing.
http://www.gametrailers.com/reviews/z1xx57/xcom--enemy-unknown-review
The base and overworld gameplay seems a lot less half-assed than i thought it would be.

Could cut and paste the review into here. Site is blocked at work.

I'm on the fence about wether I should buy this now or not. I really liked the old X-coms, but I've been burned by shitty x-com like games in the past. I'm pretty sure this will be on a steam christmas sale if I end up waiting.

The demo is just way to short to determine anything.

I keep hearing about map repetition, but then I hear from the devs that they have 80 different maps spread out across the mission types. Honestly I don't really see it as a con. The original was fairly repetitive as well map-wise.

I thought the original had automatically generated maps. I must have completed it at least six times (probably more like 10) and I can't remember ever thinking "I've been on this map before". The positions of the aliens/civilians I think are automatically generated as well.

Of course in the original there's a "tropics" set of textures, arctic, desert, city, farmland and I think that's it. Perhaps they could include a couple more types of scenery, it had occurred to me that the original isn't very representative of reality in that respect. Perhaps showing an abductor ship actually teleporting or capturing a cow would be cool too

Admittedly I was watching an hour-long gameplay video on YT and the aliens had the team surrounded yet somehow only one human was killed. In the original, even on the beginner level you would have had to be extremely lucky to escape that relatively unscathed. But then, I think when I tried to play Superhuman difficulty on the PC (original game), on the first mission the aliens pulled psionic voodoo on me. I wasn't impressed. That's one thing about the original I wish had a bit more structure and logic to it - it seemed like if one of your men was spotted and got hit with mind control you had a good chance of your entire team being screwed in the process. There ought to be some line-of-sight principle to it IMO.

I'll never forget the time on the original when my team started on a terror site scenario, I had them a bit too close together exiting the ship and an alien grenade was thrown in. My team didn't have any armour. My jaw dropped at the carnage

SO far its feeling like an Updated X-Com (as it should). It really does feel like they took the bad and figured a way to make it better. Those flanking moves that took 7 turns in the old one.. Dash can solve that, at first i thought Dash was OP move.. but run into a cluster of unseen aliens and lose that runner instanlty.. its not so OP X-Com (orginal) could get a bit LOOONG later in game, this new one has made it more streamlined.. Some will not like that and to be honest Im on the fence, but skipping 4 hours missions is ok with me for now.

Overall the game just feels FUN so simplifing it a bit wasnt a bad thing In my book.
