Who's the better fighter?

Steven Segal?
Chuck Norris? (Not now, but in his 'hey day')
Jean Claude Van Dam?

If your original 4 were in their prime conditions, I'd have to go with Segal. The best offence is a good defense. He has the best defense out of any of them.

Goldberg probably wouldn't stand a chance against any of them. If...and that's a big IF, he could get in and grapple, then he'd pound them to a pulp. But, he'd never get that close. One nice shot to the knee or throat and he's down for the count.

I think that a Bruce Lee vs. Jet Li fight would be pretty cool. Haven't seen enough of Jet Li in action to call it. I personally think that Bruce would probably win because he has the experience to overcome Li's speed.

Thing is watching the ultimate fighting championship (first few) you see that a good grappler can almost always get in close - sure a nice punch to throat or kick to knee will put somebody out of business but it seems that this is easier said than done. Joyce Gracie would always get in close even on really good strikers, and from there it was over. He wasn't even very big..

I'll agree with ya that the grapplers are the best fighters, but how many of the guys in the ultimate fighting league were more or less, had as much formal training in a highly skilled technique such as Aikido?

Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, and Bruce Lee weren't bar brawlers. They were highly trained.

I'd still have to put my money on them.

But the guys in Ultimate Fighting are both highly trained and well versed in no-holds-barred fighting. Sparing with pads and too many rules makes a sissy out of a fighter. I can gaurantee that if you took the person who wins the Olympics in Tae Kwon Do this year and stuck him in the octagon he'd cry like a little baby without it's milk.

Training has to be fully supplemented with practice fighting with as few rules as possible. You don't want to get a broken arm everytime you practice, but the fewer the rules the better. The less of a "sport" the better - thats why Mike Tyson or any other boxer would also fail in the octagon unless they were lucky enough to get a devestaing hit on the opponent before they got in tight.

I've watched the UFC since the first couple and as they've added in more and more rules its decreased the advantagous position of the grapplers. Without rules grappling is really just the best one-on-one fighting style. I would rather Bruce Lee against two or more opponents but for one on one I'd prefer to bet on a grappler.

I would have to say that I think Jet Li would kick all their asses including Bruce Lee. Jet Li has lots of experience and he won many of China's national tournaments.

But I do think that the Bruce Lee v. Jet Li fight would have been awesome.

BiB hit the nail on the head. 9 outta 10 "real" fights come down to the ground. Size and strength aren't everything but they sure make things easier and give one a much greater margin for error.

Don't get me wrong. Bruce Lee was also an accomplished wrestler/grappler. He truly had the full package. His strength for his size was also unmatched. If we are going to be fair I'd put Bruce Lee over anybody in and around his weight + or - 20 pounds.

From those fighters listed above its really hard to say. The more rules you subtract the more random the outcome becomes. I'd still lean more towards goldberg for his large size however Bruce was infamous for his lighting fast eye gouges and huge reach. Dig the one finger pushups!

Part of JKD is controlling the distance. If you control the distance, you control the fight. A grappler has to get in close, once they are you're in for a world of hurt. But if you can maintain enough distance the grappler loses his advantage. That is definitely hard to do in a ring, that's why grapplers do so well in UFC.

I think some of the Don Fryes and other huge guys of the UFC would be a tought battle for any of the 4 listed. I also think they would have a great shot against Bruce Lee, as they are bigger and most fights are ground battles.

While I think Bruce Lee is impressive, I just think his smaller stature would be a factor against some of the bigger hulking guys.
