Stupid blue box! I've followed the directions, but still can't get connected to internet when going thru the router. I know that I have a dynamically assigned IP address, but I'm not sure if I'm configuring the router correctly.

The very first screen of the Connection Wizard asks you for your user name/password/and other info. I've tried it with and without and it won't work.

I tried leaving everything in the setup blank (IP provides everything) and logging in using the "login icon" for my modem, but it will not authenticate at the host when going thru the router.

My DSL connection is fine. As long as I connect my pc directly to the modem everything's fine.

Any setup advice you could offer would really help. I have SWB DSL, if that matters/helps.

Hmm, I?ve been using the RT311 (which is basically the same) for over a year, and I love it. Are you inputting the correct information? Are you using the web browser to configure your router? I used the web browser to configure the router just to get connected to the Internet, and use telnet for everything else.

The same information you would input into windows is the same info you would input into the router setup wizard.

Hey Nox,

Yes, I'm using the IE browswer to configure the router. I even went in and checked the IP was set to the specs outlined in the instruction sheet. Lemme explain something and maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

How I connect to the internet: There's an icon on my desktop "SWB DSL". I doubleclick and a logon screen pops up. Username/pword..it authenticates and bingo, I'm on. From there I open IE or Outlook.

Am I supposed to do away with this method? I know it's difficult to try to explain to someone what they are doing wrong if you're not physically there to look and see...but please give it a shot. The INFOA (Idiot Networking Fledglings of America...membership = one..ME) NEEDS YOU! Thanks.

You no longer need the PPPoE software, since the netgear router will handle this. and did you set the TCP/IP correctly? on your computer the DNS and the Gateway should point to the Netgear router, which by default is 192.168.0.1 (which is also where you connected via web or telnet to configure your options)

in the Netgear's menu you'll need to input all the data correctly, username/password and all other internet related info.. shouldn't take you too long to put it in though.

You know (I don?t know everything but) I?ve never heard of someone having to log on to a DSL connection. Its supposed to be permanent connection, meaning you just click on the IE icon or outlook icon to lunch and you?re surfing the WWW.

Sill though, I don?t see why it shouldn?t work as long as you have input all the correct information (user name etc). Unless the routers NAT capabilities is blocking something? It may be blocking the authentication process from your ISP.

<< You no longer need the PPPoE software >>

Yep, you shouldn't need this anymore.

NOX: actually, with PPPoE, you'll need to log on just like dialup networking. and the purpose is the same as dialup networking(getting IP assigned, and/or DNS), but with a router, it'll take care all of it, so you don't need the software to initiate a net connection to surf.

But don't you input that info into the router?

Durron,

I understand what he said but you will need to long in somehow, yes the router will do it, but not if it doesn't know the user info. That is what I?m asking, or trying to get clarification pertaining to the PPPoE login. I don't know much about PPPoE because my DSL ISP does not use it.

Does your ISP use PPPoE?

Actually come to think of it when I was on RR they used PPPoE, then discontinued it.

Why not just call Netgear tech support. One of the many reasons I got my RT311 about six months ago was the 24/7 tech support.

uninstall PPPoE, set your NIC card settings to all auto assign, ...then go through the connection wizard and put your info in. then it'll all work

When trying to setup your router use the serial link and get in to the firmware via hyperterminal or some other terminal program. It makes setup a lot easier and you dont have to put that stupid software on your system. You can also see exactly what is going on with your ip addresses, etc inside the router itself.
