When I've been able to determine a cause most times it's been a driver or the hardware itself. A couple of times it's been a piece of software.
I'd never know this if I didn't change hardware so often.

I'd go with the "stupid microsoft or whatever". I don't remember off hand ever having linux crash on me, and NetBSD has only done it a couple times when I was using an MP kernel (SMP is still experimental in NetBSD). I grabbed some newer kernel source, built it, and haven't had a crash since.

The great thing about unix is that generally as your competence increases, the problems decrease, and your efficiency increases. What would have taken me hours, days, or weeks to figure out when I was a n00b now takes me seconds, minutes, or hours. I can do pretty insane things with just shell scripting, let alone "real" languages like python, perl, php etc. In an environment like windows, that's not quite the case. I see windows "admins" doing their thing, and they're just clicking through the same inane boxes everyone else clicks through. There is much less benefit for becoming competent with windows.

Anyways, back to the subject at hand, you see competent windows people here at AT all the time having problems with windows. That's the problem with a closed system, there's no one to go to except the vendor, and they want you to cough up money for it, and even then you're damn lucky if it gets fixed. With an open system, you can fix it yourself and submit a patch, or file a bug and let someone else fix it. There are no "dead ends".

Most times it is my fault. In rare cases it is an applications fault. Even more rare than that is it the fault of Windows.

it can be any of the three's fault.

most likely in order, IMHO:

1)User
2)OS (if windows particularly)
3)hardware - oc'd or improperly installed hardware, insufficient cooling, etc. would default to User problem again.

Its the Dumb Sh!t user. All of the other problems can be traced back to the dumb a$$ user who did something wrong. He shouldnt be installing Adware/Spyware, he should be removing it on a constant basis. He shouldn't be f*cking w/ the OS, It wont f*ck up if they dont f*ck with it. Dont even think about opening the Computer case unless you want something to break you dumb f*cking Sh!t....

Yeah... I dont get many calls back from my customers.

the last dozen or so times my computer has crashed (~6 months) have been while i was scrolling through the search results from kazaa lite. So I would classify this as the programmer of kazaa or the programmer of windows' fault.

If the program crashes, it's Kazaa's fault, if the computer crashes, it's Windows fault...
