why 100% cpu usage?

I've been noticing the fan on my 3 year old Lenovo laptop being on constantly. I haven't reformatted for a while, but also don't have too much stuff installed on this computer.

Looking at task manager, it seems the reason for the fan on is presumably to cool the CPU, which is always near 100% usage, apparently just from a few tabs worth of my chrome browser. The 4 chrome.exe's are using approximately 80-85% of my CPU usage:

Anyone know typical reasons why this is? And why is the CPU frequency bar (blue line) fluctuating like a sine wave?

well maybe it has something to do with shockwave, since those 4 chrome tabs all used them and have been opening for a few days.

The CPU usage went down to single digits once I closed all those chrome tabs and opened some new ones. Regular web pages and youtube don't seem to be causing too much trouble.

Still odd that 4 old chrome tabs can max out my CPU, though.

I still have issues in Chrome with shockwave causing the browser to crash occasionally and problems with HTML 5 videos locking up. Its not quite perfect yet.

The fan might be running because it's having a problem cooling the CPU... take a can of compressed air and blow the CPU vents out.

coincidentally, I have the same shockwave issue and it's getting frequent and
really annoying, still trying to resolve it, I have tried re-installing my browser
but to no avail

The current version of chrome has serious issues with my GPU (or my GPU has serious issues with chrome). Every time I have a video playing or a showing shockwave ad some of my browser tabs just go white, no contents at all. It came right after a chrome update but I am also some beta drivers, really ought to track it down as its kind of annoying.

These things just aren't perfect, GPUs aren't good at accelerating multiple different things yet and the browser support for GPU acceleration isn't there yet either.
