Google's dictionary function, that’s what it says the definition of racism is.

Dictionaries are publications like any other, and merely state the views of the dictionary compiler as to how words are being used. They certainly don't capture every aspect and nuance of the meanings of words. Besides, I'd say that definition implicitly involves questions of power.

I’m looking at the definition and I don’t know how you are getting an implied power out of that. It’s anazes me that anyone would hold that position to be honest.

If I’m understanding you right a black guy and a white guy can think the exact same thing about each other (that the other is dangerous because of their skin color for example) but only the white guy would be racist because of “power”. That doesn’t seem a tad absurd you you?

Nope. Any more questions?

What seems absurd to me is the idea that 'thoughts in heads' have some independent existence and meaning, shorn of context and accompanying actions. That seems rather simple-minded, or just downright odd, to me.

Can Asians be racist? Or since their “power” lies in between blacks and whites I’m guessing it’s possible for them to be racist towards blacks but not towards whites?

This thead seemed to have died lol. I am curious how Asians stack up, are they able to be racist or only half racist?

Would the black lawyer be unafraid to deliver a package in an inner city black neighborhood? Statistically, compared to the story in this thread, where are his chances worse?

But THAT never makes it to the news. I wonder why.

Yes I know why

I'm willing to bet that most here that agree with the Dad would also be too afraid to go into the area you describe..

You seem to be really fucking ignorant of race relations in this country and completely unable to put yourself in someone else's shoes who doesn't look like you. When it's pointed out to you how others feel and tell you about their life experience, you call bullshit and tell them their feelings and experience are wrong.

Every thread about race is the same with you. You put your fingers in your ears and you refuse to listen.

Maybe you should stop posting, shut the fuck up and start reading and listening to what people are telling you instead trying to tell everyone how your feelings and experiences trump theirs.

It was stated that people that aren’t in a position of "power" aren’t able to be racist. I’m trying to understand that logic. Follow up questions was regarding Asians because they fall somewhat in the middle on the power structure, so are they capable of being racist? Feel free to explain it to me, my fingers aren’t in my ears.

Asians are capable of being racist. They can also be fat but there are far less of them then the white population as a percentage, IMO.

And, yup, asians can indeed be racist towards black people. Still all depends on context. In some contexts (in other countries, e.g. the expulsion of the Ugandan Asians) it can work the other way round. But we are discussing this particular case in the US.

In this particular case you said it was 'racism'. Do you really feel threatened by this guy's reluctance to hand-deliver misdirected mail? Do you think it's of-a-piece with attitudes that might get you beaten up by Nazis or shot by a cop or discriminated against in employment?

I just don't see why you find it hard to see it from other's perspectives. To me it seems intuitively obvious that part of this is about a genuine, if quite small, fear for what might happen (particularly to his son) but much of it is just a way of expressing anger and upset at the situation he and his offspring and others like them are in, given the failure of the majority with power to do much to prevent outrages like the shooting incident. What the guy's comments and actions _mean_, what effect they have, is entirely dependent on the wider context in which they occur. Just saying "its racism" seems a bit of a petty reaction, to me.

Had the guy declared an intention to go out and beat up white people, well, its still a bit nuanced, but I wouldn't have a problem with using the word 'racism' to describe that reaction.

Funny how sharks aren't more likely to bite you if white.

Well, some prefer white meat and some prefer dark meat.

Sharks universally avoid Asians, though, because they know that they'll just be hungry again in about 30 minutes.

Did I mention for the 5th time the 14 year old kid who was shot at because he was lost. Yet that seems to be lost on you why you continue to cry "that would never happen"

Is that your brain defect or just willful ignorance? Maybe its the Trump "facts don't matter" thing again. U orange too?
No rational person would say that would never happen, but it's far less rational to take the exception and claim it's the new rule. It's only the rule in your mind because you want it to be so to back up your preconceived notions.

I never said it was the rule. What I say it is an increased risk solely on the basis of being black.
