We take in more than we expend, and it adds up over the years. Something as simple as drinking beer once a week can turn someone into a blimp.

i don't think it's a matter of being fat, it's a matter of extremes. for whatever reason, americans like extremes. yes, you see more than your fair share of obese people here. but if you go to europe, you'll also see that there aren't as many "gym rats" either. people in europe have a more narrow range of body physique. you won't see tons of 300 pounders, but you also don't see the mass populations of incredibly sexy people like you do in miami or LA. it's all about extremes, man.

Speaking of reality checks, did you bother to look up life expectancies before you posted? Had you done that, you might have found that that among developed nations, the US is at the very bottom. Of course, if you were comparing the US to say, Zambia then you need better standards.

Like others already said. You want food? Look around. It's available for us 24/7 with advertisements to boot. They make it seem normal to indulge yourself with a donut and coffee before you go to work, with a quarter ponder with fries for launch, and 2nds after every meal. Not to mention, with our economy we're just spoiled. Just because we all don't drive BMWs and live in 3 bed room houses does not necessarily mean we're not spoiled.

It's hard to imagine with our rights and freedoms, that other countries arn't the same and live the same life style.

Go to Japan. Live in a 8 foot wide apartment, work 12 hour shifts, with rice and fish as the predominant regimen of your diet.

There are many other reasons of course. We're inactive and even most of the jobs in the united states do not call for manual labor. People who sit behind a desk all day in front of a computer and then go home and lay on the couch do not burn as much calories as lets say.... a construction worker, a fire fighter, or even a ditch digger.

From all civilized countries the usa is the one with a LOW average life-span, LOTS of diseases like cancer, haeart diseases etc.

Japanese and Western Europe have a HIGHER average life-span ! Correct me if i am wrong, i dont have the exact data ready right now.

us people eat unhealthy, processed food ----> cancer
dont exercise and move (drive thru banking, drive-thru whatever) ----> less exercise than people somewhere else
jobs which require sitting a lot, spending time on the comp, tv etc, long commutes sitting in the car to a job where people sit....etc..etc..

Get the idea....

Also, IMHO the average concern of the us americans about what they eat is probably lower than eg. in EU...a LOT processed food here and a LOT food with preservatives - bad economy ----> buy cheap food without looking what it actually consists of.....its expensive to buy organic and healthy food here !!

Thats why we always go out for dinner and eat either ITALIAN, CHINESE, THAI, INDIAN, WHATEVER....have fun with your "good" american food a la "fried chicken" and "cheeseburger"...and yes....we (usa) die earlier than people eg. in Asia....

no seriously, how come nobody has blamed atkins yet. although the blame should really goto the soda industry.

also the sugar lobby, sugar costs twice as much here thanks to subsidies, hence cola makers use corn syrup which tends to turn into fat more easily than plain old sugar. and it costs us billions of dollars per year, because corporations deserve all the tax breaks they can get...

go read a book called fat land. its interesting. after the 1970's farmers no longer were required to silo their corn, a huge glut of corn with the developement of non fructose corn syrup enabled creation of ultra cheap food. using that syrup food froze better...so tv dinners etc were now viable. before that...sugary stuff just cost more. then came supersizing, ever increasing portions.... variety of food/snacks exploded. heh one tid bit is funny, the originator of the larger popcorn sizes found out that people will not buy two bags of popcorn for themselves no matter how u price it. it looks like gluttony. but give them a larger size with the same amount? easy sell...

but really, that supersize me guy is a tard, of course u get fat eating supersize for 3 meals a day, the fact that he could barely keep it down means no one in their right mind would do it.

Maybe now, but the trends are changing, and with a daughter this is what scares me. We'll do our best to not expose her to this, but when she's on her own, we can only hope we made an impact...
