Why are commercials so loud?

Ok, here is one, which seriously frosts my ass.

I'm quietly watching something on tv, while my grandson is sleeping in the next room. It goes to commercial, then just blairs. He wakes up, crying, because some stupid marketing exec has decided that commercials need to be bombed into your home with deafening volume.

That is just so wrong! I'm pissed. :|

When things are at a lower volume, I actually listen, and get more out of the media.

Because mr excecuitive is smart as hell. Makes you pissed off and you have to turn it down sort of forcing you to watch the commercials so you can turn it back up when your show comes back on. Kinda makes sure alot of people watching cant go anywhere because they have to turn down the tv when the commercials come on and back up when they are over and had to watch every one of them in hopes they were over to turn the tv back up. They got them so high most of your self volume leveling tv's cant adjust for that much gain. It freakin brilliant IMO, stupid and anoying as all hell, but brilliant none the less.
Stuff on the internet is the same way for all 4 networks, well 5 if you include upn. But all of them, once it goes to commercial-WHAM-loud as hell, and on CBS, in most cases, have the volume gain so high its distorting.

You can actually blame the lazyass production people who didn't bother to check the sound levels before recording that commercial to their prod tape. If the people at the studio would have taken an extra 10 seconds to properly check this, the problem wouldn't exist.

Well, the networks that do this, need to be brought into court, and their asses sued off. This is not a monetary issue, but one where they have no right to breach the peace, in my own home. What I am feeling right now, has been pent up for years.

But this sh!t seriously needs to stop. It just seems to be getting more agressive lately.

Now that has got to go on my shopping list because blaring loud commercials happen to be one of my pet hate also.

Nah, they know EXACTLY what they're doing.

Thats like saying the guy who made this commerical forgot to edit it:

Head on, apply directly to the forehead!

The fact that I, and everyone else here knows this commercial by heart proves how well it works.

I like that, but still, having to buy extra hardware, because the stations are behaving badly, does not sit well with me. My cable provider should provide this at no charge. I'm gonna start a movement!

This is why I hit "MUTE" whenever the commercials kick in. That way they can't still market to me if I'm looking elsewhere.

I remember volume normalization was a feature in some TV sets, maybe 10 years ago.

WTF happened to that?

Not sure if this is 100% correct or not, but on the Screensavers a few years ago they had this question and they said it was because the ads are compressed where as the normal broadcast isn't. The idea was that this somehow caused the difference in volume.

Not sure If I buy it or not, but those guys usually knew their stuff.
