I can't stand tanning. I personally think it's the most rediculous thing on the planet. "Ohhh gee, I am going to sit in the sun, let my skin cook, then in 20 years I'll look like an old pair of gym shoes as my skin is nasty, wrinkly, and leathery". While living in FL I saw too many 40 year old women who looked like that old hag from "Something about Mary".

My wife already has had cancer and my family has a predisposition to skin cancer. I'll keep my Norse skin pale and encourage my wife to do the same.

Many people, myself included, get a bit of color from 15-20 minutes of sun a day.

You're right - you can get burned. At the higher elevations on the islands in the lower latitudes the solar index reaches into the double digits and light colored skin burns very fast.

Yeah, and vast majority of people in the world live at higher elevations on islands in the lower latitudes. Please.


15min/day won't give you a "tan". It'll make it so you aren't completely pale, but you won't be tan. It's a position I certainly advocate since the sun does provide benefits.

Tanning, like Diamonds, stick models, and ugly clothes, are "beauty" lies propegated by the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and "in" people. They can KMA. I'd rather my wife live longer and not look fugly in 20 years than have her adhere to some stupid media inspired image of beauty.

Perhaps that is my perspective because she has already had cancer at 26 (albeit Thyroid and not skin). By the time you get skin cancer it's too late to take back all of the damage. I'd rather not take that chance.
