The remainder of the zip codes in Schenectady range from 12301 to 12309 "

you are correct DeeTees 12345 is only GE corp ... alot of large buildings have their own zip code for example Empire State Plaza has its own zip code (multiples mattering on what part and office) very common for this type of zip codeing system

actually their are more then just 12301-12309 i can remember one more right off the top of my head
12325 scotia - glenville you forgot .... there might be more havent bothered to really look. Just for fun i think i will check the Delivery barcode code system (DBCS) database run tonight for all of 123** zips on that mail run. (123 is always schenectady just matters what part) .

BTW real tough at this point to figure out where i work huh

A lot of you looking at the cost of these houses in NY as dirt cheap don't realize that a huge reason the price of real estate is lower in NY is because the taxes on it are so much higher. The taxes on an $8000 dump are more than the taxes many (not all) of you are paying on far nicer homes in other states. I laughed at the real estate agent in NC when he apologized for the taxes being so much higher if I lived inside the city (Statesville) The difference in taxes was $60 per year. I told him I'd be happy if mine only went up that much a year in NY.

Look at all the stuff you have to put up with to get it, rediculous real estate prices, smog, traffic, lack of curtural venues.... the list of far more important things than temperature goes on. But what do I know I am moving to one of the top ten worst places to live. Newburgh, New York but once the train starts going straight to NYC from here it will become one of the best!

Having lived in both very hot housing markets (Seattle), and very un-hot markets (Youngstown, OH........and many markets in between), IMHO a great deal of the "housing value" in many US markets is overstated. Places like NYC may be able to sustain current levels/rates but I think other "hot" markets are ripe for a big fall. Probably brought on by the general global normalization between high-cost and low-cost economies. Remember, if you have a city with 1000 available housing units and 1001 people who are trying to buy you have a sellers market. Drop that 1001 by 2 people - say people simply won't be able to afford ever rising housing costs in some markets as global pricing pressures lower average incomes in there area - down to 999 people with 1000 units still available and now you develop a buyers market. This is a gross simplification, but some thing that people should consider before taking out half million dollar mortgages on houses that are rationally worth less than half that.

Houses are so cheap because you are getting closer to the armpit of New York State: Troy, Schenectady and the rest of that area! Owning a >1000 sq ft home there that doesn't have sheets hung on the windows qualifies you for "royalty" there.

Haha - you're totally right Dave! Ever eat at Mangia? Good italian food.

I have, but not in a while.. Maybe I'll take your recommendation Oh by the way, to my surprise I saw potholes being filled on Colvin today (which was in very close competition with Fuller), of course it looked like more filler crap was going on the street than in the holes, and, another common thing I've noticed, they tend to excessively over-fill them, so it makes them more likely to come back apart a few days later, and your car is now going over an excess of bumps.. sigh.

You guys are all nuts if you think even 50k is a lot. You cannot get a one bedroom one bathroom place in some parts of NYC for less than 500k. A decent place with 4 bedrooms and 3 baths will run you a cool 10mil if your looking for a place next to the park...6k is the cheapest i've ever seen a house

I didn't know there were any until this forum poped up.. it felt like AT was invading my home.. it was so strange seeing "Albany, NY" in a topic.. and that's the turn i was talking about, that and down to road past the traffic light by the armory garage, that area's bad too, hopefully they did a "decent" job repairing it (my expectations are low, I take that road every day to/from school)

How about Albany drivers? Now I know people drive bad in Massachusettes, and Californian's can't drive in rain.. but Albany drivers are just plain stupid.. "oh there's a car coming, let's wait to pull out until he's 3 feet from us and go 4 miles an hour, then lets stop and wait five minutes while blocking two lanes of traffic, and maybe eventually put our flashers on.. then we'll do a U-turn in rush hour traffic on a 4-lane road just for fun"

Ah, I've turned this into a vent

LOL

How old do you think most homes are in this area?

On avg over 100 years old.

The home I own now is over 100 years old,and it had an addition put on it,
from what i can tell in the mid 1920's.

There was No insulation in this house, and it had all single pane windows,
that were big! Like 31 wide and 65 inches high!
I have added some insulation, and replaced some of the windows;with double pane vinyl
insulated windows to make the house warmer.

My current, and former home had gas lights in them years ago, before having electricity
installed,in fact i would bet these homes had telephones before electric.

I grew up in the "capital district" and went to college there. The drivers there are much better than around DC. I hate the Albany area, but at least the drivers aren't that bad. It probably has something to do with the lower volumes and the lack of immigrants since there are zero jobs there. Nothing against immigrants other than if they learned to drive in certain(not all) other countries, they generally drive like maniacs(I'll now put a flame suit on just in case).
I can remember flipping out when traffic on the twin bridges slowed below 40. Oh, how naive I was. I'd be thrilled to go 40 the whole way home now. Much better than the stop and crawl crap here every day. I won't even start on what happens if it rains of snows here.

Oh I don't doubt other areas have worse drivers.. I've witnessed it.. I just consider Albany drivers in general to be downright stupid drivers.. Like they don't understand what right-of-way is, or how a four way stop works, or what exactly those three lights on the traffic light mean And forget blinkers.. they use them when they shouldn't (like randomly while driving down the road let's turn our blinker on and not do anything, or turn it on and slow down, then suddenly speed up again) and they never use them to actually turn.. ugh..

of course I'm very generally stereotyping here..

6k is a great deal on a house. You might be able sell 6k in crack and pay for the house straight up in a week! But if you get shot don't expect the ambulance to come by to take you to the hospital. The paramedics aren't dumb enough to come out to that part of town.

sheesh,
Come out to LA and any living space you will get for $6800.00 will be on wheels. Hell, my house was a major fixer upper that cost 120k and that was 60k below market. I do live maybe 5 minutes from Manhattan & Hermosa Beach but also 5 minutes from Lennox and Inglewood.

For the zipcode game,
mine is 90260. The famous zipcode "90210" is a very, very small section of Beverly Hills.

Wow, never realized how many people there are in this area. If we have an Anandtech Albany meet we might actually have people show up. Would anyone here go if there was one? I would.
