actually monotaur you are correct 12345 is schenectady ... General Electric in Schenectady to be exact. And they get alot of undeliverable mail every year sent to them at zip 12345. Probably a boring part of someones day is picking out all the mail that doesn't belong to them .

merlyn

So the entire town is not 12345?

Thats insane, in another 3 months i could buy that.

prices in dc cost way too much for way too little, i hear its because dc and sanfran or la are the only places, cities where there's job growth. DC its ovious because of all the Big D contractors, lockheed, northrup, raytheon, bae; they're everywhere scattered across nothern virginia, also reston va, housing prices nearly doubled across the last 4-5 years, its really insane. 2 bedroom condo's are going for 200K+

Traffic is a nightmare too. people here dont know how to use their mirrors and you see and you see an accident like everyweek or so.

People here, northen virginia anyway, they're so uncool, tools, all of them. They're so full of themselves and only into themselves, like little spoiled brats, no one knows how to share and they're all about material, bling bling, like "look at me, i have the biggest XXX." dorks.

end of rant. ~~

okay... i really doubt anyone wants to live in that house/area...
after seeing what the house looks like and the neighborhood... 24/7 police driving around i dont think you will have a fun time trying to fix your house or walk the dog.
any decent house/area in albany will prob cost you around 10k or higher. you really have to live in a special area if you dont want your kids growing up being little gangsters. the 'ghetto' seems to be growing outwords in all directions so alot of people are moving to the towns and boondocks 5 miles away from albany...(all really nice houses and new) so yeah.. lately ive seen more graffiti and stuff around my neighborhood...and my neighborhood is probably one of the better ones for living in the city...well anyway..buyer beware.

my old house is listed in the above link for $35,000

I let the bank foreclose on it.

They have not been able to sell it for a loss!

I had it on the market, asking $42,900 for 2 years,
with one offer of $36,500,which I could not accept
as I owed about $39,000 + realtors commission.

These prices are insanely low. I'm in San Diego. I bought a 3 bedroom 1 bath for $179k 6 years ago and now it's worth $400k.

If you think prices are low in Albany, go to the North Country - places like Watertown are wicked low priced.

What makes you think that every city doesn't have property valued at this?

Why would you want to live in a dump anyway? If the price is low, there's generally a reason why!

Lastly, why hasn't this thread been locked yet??

Notice that house for $8900 is on a numbered street like I mentioned in my last post. "Third Ave", that's the first sign to say "get the hell outta there"

Anyway, Albany College of Pharm student myself.. the place is hell. But oh well.

I realize that this is OT and we probably shouldn't keep bumping it but...

I couldn't help noticing that all of these houses list "RV/Boat parking" as one of the main selling points...

I can't really see that someone looking to move into a $6000.00 house is worried about where he can park his yacht. (and if you owned an RV why would you stay in this neighborhood?)

just a random note.

$60,000 I do not think I can be buried for that in SoCal.

I live in the burbs northwest of LA, and the going cheapest price for new townhouses is 330K. Most homes will run in the mid 400K. I look at a 1/4 acre lot with a 4 bedroom house on a golf course for 1.5 million, with no landscaping, pool etc.

Luckily I already have a nice townhouse, but I am not sure I could afford the 440K my units are going for now. I think for my family to move up to house that we like will run 750-850K, that is a lot of money for a OK tract house.

really...because that area really really sucks. after 4 years of RPI, I am quite happy to be anywhere else. Currently in San Diego where the average house goes for 450-500 grand, and they're tiny. But, its like 75 here now, and probably 35 in Troy. I had a friend spinout in a snowstorm last week just south of Saratoga Springs. No snow out here and the snow in the mountains is surprisingly better for skiing (not sheets of ice)

Amen, brother. The only places around here where people seem semi-normal (and I'd actually be willing to pay $200k plus for a condo) are Capitol Hill and Old Town.

Lools like a bird house. Looks like bird doo on the hood and windshield. "Brewster, wipe that bird doo off the car."

You want a nice place to live - go to Amherst/Williamsville near Buffalo. It's deemed one of the safest cities in America and you can get mansion-type houses for $250k. You'll have to deal with lower income (low cost of living) and the COLD though.

Was there for 4.5 years for school... GREAT area.

RPI would be great if it were ANYWHERE ELSE

What everyone else said is right, you don't want those houses

6k? are you serious? It's about...350k for a dumpy house in the ghetto part of town where I live. 550k gets you a fairly nice house in a decent area.

Alright, for comparison's sake.. the CITY of albany is a trash-hole is my opinion.. but the outskirts are very nice.. Guilderland or Bethlehem or Latham, most parts of Colonie, etc. are nice, and you can get nice houses for 100k and very nice houses for 200k (in my opinion at least).. these would be the "suburban" areas.. I would stay out of Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Rensselaer (I can't spell that crap, who'd wanna live where you can't spell where you live?), Cohoes, and a few others.. I don't know how other cities generally compare, but the ones I've mentioned don't believe in filling potholes.. The road I live on, when you turn onto it, your car falls to what was probably an old cobblestone road 100 years ago. Also, Fuller road is one of the worst around me Every time you pull out of the driveway (if you have one) you need to get an alignment

The western and southwestern parts of the City of Albany are OK. You don't want the eastern end of the City (e.g., stay away from any numbered streets or avenues). Other than that the only nice place within a City boundary in the area is Saratoga Springs. Lots of nice suburbs, though.

Prices in the area are considered low compared to other areas in the State. That may change if Sematech/nanotech at SUNYA really happens and takes off.

>Random fact of the day - Schenectady's zip code is 12345.<

Followup on random fact;

Actually the 12345 zip code is General Electric Corporation. When zip codes were introduced GE pulled all sorts of political strings for the zip code and all mail to General Electric Corporation was addressed to

GE
Schenectady New York 12345

The remainder of the zip codes in Schenectady range from 12301 to 12309

My daughter went to school at Saint Rose and I really like Albany. I would consider moving there. I live about 80 miles south of Albany and our real estate is high because we are considered "commuting distance" from NYC. The Hudson Valley is one of the most beautiful places to live. Very friendly folks, for the most part educated and accepting and non judgmental. Remember Woodstock is here! It is an easy trip into THE city and you have any cultural event you could ever desire. I have lived many places and cannot imagine living anywhere else except perhaps Chicago. Albany has some rough parts, but nothing like DC or NYC. The job market for professionals is not to bad in Albany, better than the rest of the Hudson Valley. The only place there is any job growth is in government so this is not a bad place to be. Nice thing is you get the best of both worlds, fairly small town, then travel into the city by train for any needs. If you are looking for a good place to live that is cheap, Albany is a Hot Deal!
