I don't like to stereotype, but it does seem this way. I know two Indian families competing with one another, together they have close to $1million worth of cars. I think it's madness personally.

it's like asking why chinese people eat rice. maybe not all chinese people do, but a good portion of us do, so that question itself should not be considered offensive

I am Indian and not offended. I just thought this entire thread was interesting. I was trying to fan the flames to see what would happen.

I know many Indians who behave like the OP commented. They are what we call "gammad" Indians, which has an English equivalent to saying someone is a bumpkin. They come up from little and squander their precious time and money one-upping another person next door. This seems to a chronic problem around the world, but more in poorer countries.

To this day I tell people that Indians, as a whole, are some of the most dis-evolved people on the planet. We can soar to the heights of success, but we cannot take care of our own people and our country (India). If we as Indians cannot take criticism honestly and look at ourselves for being offending morons sometimes, then how are we to grow?

I make sure that any family or friends coming over to the USA to work are reminded of American society's expections, such as not getting too personal too quickly, not commenting on another's looks or features before you know them, not eating too smelly foods in a public lunch area, using deodorant, wearing a t-shirt underneath their dress shirts to absorb sweat, not standing too close or too far away from another person when speaking, not speaking too fast, not coming over to a person's house without calling first, etc.

Your post says what I've been trying to get across very well and quite a bit more kindly.

I apologize to anyone I might have offended, that wasn't my purpose or intent. If you want to talk more closely about what I posted, please PM me and I'll be glad to.

and the same exists in asian/chinese community. one upping your friends and neighbors. it's pointless.

as for stereotyping, people need to understand when to be offended.

if i walk by someone and i hear "ching chong chong" noises from their mouths just because i am of asian descent, that i get offended, and i just ignore it.
if i am in a conversation and someone brings up the subject of rice rockets and what is up with pimping out a honda civic, what is with their tax-evading tactics, what is with their math superiority, etc. i will even participate in those conversations because that is something that is true in the asian community.

you bet your ass if rice would smell the whole place up, i would stop bringing that in to work, or at least not have it in a public area.

I don't care what race you are. 1 post = sarcasm, 3-4 derogatory posts is at the very least tasteless and worth a week off.

With all that money they could one up on their neighbors and buy a pair of shoes to replace the slippers. Hopefully the neighbors will follow suit and this'll become a trend.

Let me just ask you this: Who made you judge, jury and executioner of how Indians should live their lives? What makes you pretend that your opinion has the slightest bearing on what Indians do with themselves? What have you done lately that you make such bold proclamations on how Indians should subject themselves to ridicule that they may aspire to be as Westerners are? What magical specimen of that dis-evolved species are you that you have risen above the mass and can sermonize them on how to improve their lot?

I would really like to know what Indian Americans are eating that causes them to smell. I smell awesome and I eat Biryani for breakfast.

I think the reason some Indians (and there's a whole bunch of them) get excessively competitive is pretty simple. People went from having absolutely nothing (education, money, exposure to the world out there etc.) to Master's Degrees & six-figure jobs. Too much in too little time went straight to their head.

If you ever want to see a truly garish & disgusting display of wealth, attend an affluent Indian wedding (in India). Some of the women look like the window display of a jewelry store. They seriously think having 2 pounds of chunky gold hanging around their neck makes them look attractive.

I have seen people living in $100,000 homes throw $30,000 at their children's weddings. I seriously don't think throwing a party that costs a third of your home's value is sensible.

i think you completely missed the points made by pradeep1 and agaboogaboo.
they are recommending ways for their people to better position themselves in the american society, not in their countries of origin.

for example: think about a white american woman who loves to eat pork chop and wears scantily clad clothes, now this person goes to an off shore location, say, a muslim dominated country, to work or to live, would you expect this person to eat pork chops as lunch in public? and to wear tank tops and miniskirts out in the streets and expect NOT to be ridiculed? NO! you do this and you will be looked upon differently, respect the society where you are living in, you can do all those things in your private home, but do not bring that out to the public where everyone is not accustomed to your particular culture.

haahah. thts exactly what I was thinkg. I've heard this stereotype a lot but any Indian/beloved patriot I have come across does not smell bad at all!

With regards to the competition point, I have noticed it back home in India especially with the older ladies in our community but most of them are uneducated.. I havent noticed this in the educated folk although they do exhibit some of the jealousy being human! Nothing as extreme though.

Oh and athithi, I gotta say, you're my hero! . I was readin the first few posts and wondering "where the hell is athithi. where's that tiger avatar? "

Ah, the "you misinterpreted me" defense! I can't believe you are making this so easy for me. Your whole 'for example' paragraph is a strawman argument. Where do I even begin deconstructing such a poor example! Indians have been extremely successful in the U.S precisely because of their ability to adapt. They are often recognized as the model minority in this country. They contribute in disproportionately greater measure to their presence in this country and ask for very little in return. Unlike the Jewish community, until very recently, they have not even participated in the political scene. You could search all the world over and rarely will you find a foreign group that has shown itself to be more adaptable and mindful of a local's primacy over later immigrants. That you should ask for better speaks for what we have come to be seen as capable of doing. That you ask it with such disdain speaks for your lack of comprehension of what we have already accomplished.

Well, to me it sounds like he's attempting to help people integrate into a new society.

A fine and noble goal, no doubt. But the Indian community? Arguably the most integrated foreign community in the US in recent decades?

show me how recent/new immigrants are immediately considered integrated into the community

your argument only applies to second, third generation, american born indians.

i have Indian/Pakistani friends born here who shows none of the traits that I wrote. no smell, no accent, nothing. most 2nd and 3rd generations are so far removed from their original culture that they have to be considered strictly americans of a different descent. we are arguing that most recent and 1st generations who are not removed from their original culture and are less integrated into society

Unfortunately by my observations it seems to root more from the money=power way of thinking which is just a reality in places where corruption is the name of the game. Therefore they try desperately to elevate their percieved status just to stay above the radar of those that might take advantage. I much prefer the approach of staying below the radar but being ignored is no fun.

Oh and athithi, I gotta say, you're my hero! . I was readin the first few posts and wondering "where the hell is athithi. where's that tiger avatar? "

 On the contrary, I would much rather not be seen as a FOB with a chip on his shoulder because I really am not like that. The OP was by someone whose parents (father, at least) is from Pakistan. That started the itch because it seemed rather dense on the OP's part to make the distinction over an artificial line and initiate a stereotype which, if anything, was true in the opposite (without judging the propriety of their attitude, I believe the small penis envy pretty accurately describes Pakistan's relationship toward India in the subcontinent; extrapolating that to their respective denizens brings us to the converse of the original statement by the OP that an Indian would be jealous of a Pakistani). To see a 2nd generation Pakistani American butcher the English language was an additional incentive to jump in and swing away I am, after all, a mere first generation (soon to be) Indian American Dare I dream to be better than the OP!

What's wrong with being a FOB, Athithi?! I take offence to that.. I, on the other hand, would much rather not be seen as a ABCD/Firang.. lol

Seriously though, this whole stereotype about south asians stinking.. I havent come across anyone who stinks as bad as the stereotype makes it sound.

EDIT: Just for the record, I smell pretty damn good!!

It really is an immigrant thing, not an indian thing. Just indians are among the new wave of immigrants so it's easier to recognize.
