As a young person, I can tell you that it isn't because I'm more "liberal". It isn't because I don't believe in core Republican ideals either: small government, respect of individual rights, and fiscal conservatism.

It is because that's not what the GOP advertises anymore, to the point the party now contradicts itself:
- Freedom of religion, so long as you are a Christian.
- Less government spending, so long as we keep bombing other countries.
- No government subsidization, unless you are a large corporation.
- Land of the free, so long as you aren't an immigrant (besides, who the FUCK isn't aside from Native Americans).
- Literal belief in the Constitution, unless it involves "border security", "intelligence", or "terrorism".
- Certain inalienable rights, unless you're LGBT.
- The notion that those in unfortunate circumstances are there simply because they are lazy.
- The notion that education and scientific principles are something to be feared or admonished.

When faced with the candidate that is shit and one that is more shit, I'll pick the one that's less shitty. That's all you can really do in a two party system that is constantly fueled by media partisanship.

It's not my fault that conservatives have forgotten what their party actually stands for.

No you idiot. The government shouldn't be in healthcare and the free market can do a much better job. Healthcare isn't a right.

Please define free market, do you want it to be like buying a used car basically no standards at all?
As this handy graphic shows our partially free market has been performing great!

The government should have been in healthcare long, long ago, as it's one of the biggest waster of money in the US at any rate and has been abused more than about anything over time on overcharging.

Even worse than Halliburton and Cheney did over the years, although I believe he learned how to do that through healthcare initially to make shitloads of money before going to Halliburton.

Go read you're history and the various people that taught him how to do it and tried repenting over their lives near the end for being assholes.

Rick Scott in FL the same way, these guys have been making shitloads of money being CEO's of healthcare systems for years and fighting reforms.

They made their money, then got political backing to continue screwing people up the ass after they were elected, as a continuation of the process.

Millennial's are by and large idealists. Many are becoming more conservative in the recession though. A friend of mine's room mate is the lead singer in a heavy metal band, and a millennial as am I; it was quite amusing listening to him argue the differences between humanitarianism and morality, and the benefits of capitalism vs. socialism with the sound studio guy, also a millennial.

why someone would become conservative in the recession beyond me.

They are the ones caused it for the most part.

I was an idealist myself about 40 years ago, practicality has better applications.

Conservatives thrive off sucking money off idealists, why the US so screwed up atm, they had a ton of money to use, sent their production Global from businesses they owned so there is a decimated middle class atm, etc

Has been going on for awhile now, once China turns around one day and fucks the US up the rear really be screwed.

If only their legislation ever came close to accomplishing any of that

Last I checked they had the majority for quite some time. Turns out leading isn't as easy as they thought.

Take gay marriage, its usually smaller rural and traditionally republican towns that hold that opinion. So the first step is to work with rural towns instead of making fun of them all the time, calling them stupid and backwards etc. Welllll thats out the window now isn't it? We call them stupid over and over again why don't they come around to our perspective!? Democrats can be dumb too

Speaking as someone born in 1987, it's the old-school social bullshit for the most part. Back when I was in the dorms 90%+ of the conversations ridiculing conservatives centered on their religious, fearful, anti-gay, anti-science, anti-global warming, anti-consumer stances.

Republicans need to get it through their skulls that they need a better reason than "The Bible tells me so.", and more importantly they need to stop trying to push their paper-thin rationalizations as their true motivations (ie: "Intelligent Design is science! And we swear there isn't even a hint of religious motivation in this argument!")

Granted Democrats aren't much better. They have a tendency to circle-jerk over European culture, government and lifestyle; and would gladly suck the America straight out of the Flag given the chance. Not that we can't learn from European methods, but Europe isn't the promised land that Democrats seem to think it is.

But here's the tipping point: The Democrats sound smarter. Even when they're full of shit, they sound intelligent and it takes analysis, if only basic analysis, to prove them wrong. When Republicans are full of shit, there's no hiding it. They can't even hope for an appeal to false "common sense"; they just come right and say "Hey! Here's a view I seriously believe that's completely full of shit!"

Example:
Democrat full of shit: "These assault rifles are killing more and more people each year and we've got to get them off the streets!"
Republican full of shit: "Well if the woman doesn't really want to be raped she can biologically reject the pregnancy."

See the difference?

For my part my voting record is split about 50/50 between the two parties, I don't honestly favor one over the other; but relative to my parents and older relatives, I'm definitely leaning to the left on most issues.

Pretty sure this is related....

http://money.cnn.com/2014/03/24/pf/taxes/middle-aged-taxpayers/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Once they start paying their fair share of income taxes, they probably won't be so keen on 'giving' their money away...

Did you read the poll? They are more liberal even when controlling for age.

Also, just an FYI: the idea that people become more conservative as they age is way overblown. Political ideology stays remarkably consistent over time for most people.

don't know if it's already been posted, but this article has been making it's rounds and seems reasonable/related:

http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303636404579395532755485004

This.

The Democratic/Republican divide in this country is almost entirely a reflection of the urban/rural divide. This is incredibly well documented through voting records, congressional districting, etc.
Millenials tend to be more liberal because America (along with the rest of the world) is becoming more urbanized (and it's the younger adults who move to the cities).
While the political agendas of the 2 parties reflect the differing needs between urban and rural voters.

Anything else that the partisans tell you is the difference between the two parties, that it's ideological, religious, etc, is simply bullshit.

Yeap. Like I said, people rarely vote issues. It's tribal.

I woke up in a sweat the other day dreaming about the state of technology now, and its influence on people in general. It was a SCREAMING TERROR.

Something strange in the world right now, and I can't explain it. I would BEWARE, there are large earthquakes and who knows what coming.

Just curious. Do you feel that these statements are widely held beliefs by their respective parties? I will clarify what I'm asking.

Does the left widely believe that "assault rifles" need to be kept off the streets?

Does the right widely believe that rape victims can biologically reject a pregnancy?
