Why get sponsors for the rare ocassion when you'll get more $$ directly from your customers. They few and far between for the worthwhile fights, so you might as well go PPV where you have NO worries about pissing off your tv sponsors.
Are you serious? I doubt they'd make more money showing it for free with commercials, because one, you cannot have commercials with boxing, and two they are expected to pull in 100 million from PPV alone tonight.
I assume because the promoters, "governing bodies," and other hangers-on routinely make more money with a PPV than with a single network broadcast. After all, that's more important than actually cultivating new fans and promoting widespread interest in their sport.
They go PPV because of the unpredicability of the sport. It's not like the Superbowl which is guranteed to last 3 hours, and you can plug commercials all the way through. A fight may only last one round (or less). How could they hope to get in their advertisements shown on a one round fight?
At least with PPV they're guaranteed to get their money no matter how long the fight lasts.
