Why are P3s so expensive?

I was thinking about upgrading, but seeing how the K7s are so much cheaper, if I do upgrade, might as well go K7. What gives?

Maybe it just costs less for AMD to manufacture their wafers. In any case, a Duron should be a better long-term investment than an Athlon Classic.

The Duron is also more OCable, but recent ones may not be able to.

One downside to going AMD is that they just clocklocked their processors so no more multiplier overclocking.

well, this may sound like heresy to some of you, but I don't intend on overclocking if I decide to do an upgrade. It's too much of a pain in the ass to shake out an overclock system. Between a Duron and a thunderbird, which one would be best and what mobo?

Naaaa, just kidding. Mostly the reason for this extra cost is due to the fact that you pay for a brand. Lot of people buy Intel because of the name and not because of price vs. performance.

Lets say that AMD in a couple of years manages to remove intel from the market. What do you think happends???. Prices will go up, like any other types of product that seems to fall in to the common mans taste.

Shortages of Intel processors is the main reason, I'd say. And also because Intel has the brand recognition to be able to price their processors that way.

konichiwa, how is the fact that AMD has clocklocked their processors a downside to going with AMD? Intel's processors are clocklocked also, so it's not a donwside for AMD buyers at all. It just erases a previous adavntage for AMD, they used to be able to overclock via multiplier setting.
