Why are people paying $100+ for a used Nexus 7 tablet?

I see many listed there for under $100. Just because some are listed over $100 doesn't necessarily mean it's selling.

You couldn't pay me to use an Amazon tablet.

That's a search for sold items.

It's overpriced because there are hardly any decent competition out against a 3 year old device. Really says something about the android tablet situation.

You said it, the tablet market in general is really, really poor.
The Amazon tablets are almost bottom of the barrel, poor screens, poor performance, yet, they still sell lots of them.
Consumers just get the cheapest thing these days, and that is all that the companies are making.
There are no standouts out there.

People are willing to pay top dollar on a phone, just not a tablet, and this is why the phone race is going strong.

Why would you never use a Amazon tablet?
I thought they're a commodity by now.
I was assuming the Fire beats the 3 year old Nexus in every was possible

Except software, one would assume. Amazon's interface is not a great experience. Native android is customizable and intuitive.

OK, so the Fire is some kind of loss leader whose sole purpose is to boost sales at the main site? Like the ultimate in bloat ware?

In all fairness to amazon, their software is at least being updated/supported unlike all the other cheap tablets on the market.

For some perspective, even old as rocks ipads still get the newest ios updates up what the HW is capable of running. That represents value (as seen on the resale market) which people are willing to pay more for.

That's the other main reason why the nexus tablets sell for more than they're otherwise worth.

Well, the ironic part is that the UPDATE is what caused my Nexus 7 to become an unusable doorstop.
It is slow as balls now, and I stopped using. I can't sell it to someone in good faith, knowing it can't handle the latest Android update.
The thing used to work great. After update? Junk.

That's mainly for the notorious 2012 nexus 7. Those in your search are the much better 2013.

OP isn't distinguishing between 2012 (what they own) and 2013 (what's selling for a higher price) N7. They are worlds apart from each other.

Although I don't think I'd buy one today if mine (2013) died. Support is still going strong for it, though. Waiting for a stable CM 14.1, nightlies aren't quite there yet. I don't think I'd even buy any tablet when mine dies. Maybe if I traveled more.

I'm waiting for a Pixel C tablet running Andromeda. That will get me to buy a tablet.

I need to fish mine out of the recycling dumpster at work, i stopped using it a long time ago because it was so slow. Everything is so slow. But if i can get $50 for it, i will sell it on eBay since it still runs and the screen is not cracked.

I don't think it is a loss leader, they stream ads to you.
Once you buy from them, you are in amazon's ecosystem.

It's easy to do when they buy phones in term of "monthly payment" vs actual $ cost. It's gotten better now that you finance them... but still people suck at finances. I mean come on it's only $20 a month, my phone bill is $50 so it's not that much more!... Vs if you made them pay cash up front, promise the $800 phones wouldn't be nearly as popular.

I have a handful of tablets at home. Both my kids have an ipad each, my wife has a windows tablet and amazon fire, I have an amazon fire and asus transformer. Of all the tablets the Fire's are the worst. Sure they work. i use mine mainly for taking advantage of our prime membership and it is used for reading more than anything but I also have three kindle ereaders so even there the Fires are sub standard. Battery life is shit and it has to be charged daily just from strictly using it to read books (which i read every day). App selection is lacking compared to apple and android so it loses on that front as well. The screen is ok but again compared to all of our other tablets substandard. It is updated on a regular basis. I just bought a second paperwhite and now my Fire is collecting dust. I will most likely give it to my daughter to use when she wants something smaller in hand besides her gen3 ipad.

IMO buying a used ipad gen 3 or higher is the way to go but if android is a must then look for a used Asus. I bought my ASUS Transformer Pad TF701T 32GB new back in 2013 and it still works like the day I bought it. I prefer it over the ipads we have at home. It works great!

Can someone help me find a used Android tablet on eBay?

The primary use will be to read longer articles on the sofa, and not the desktop.
