Then we'd better define what Ginsburg meant by "racially discriminatory policies." Because if all she meant was voter ID laws, that's pretty thin.

Found to be discriminatory by a court.

Seems pretty bad, no?

The reason for preclearance is that states would purposefully keep passing racist voting laws faster than they could be challenged in court, as court cases can take years.

The point is you are incapable of a reasonable dialogue. In fact if I want to know what you think about any issue, I'll just take the GOP response and 99% of the time, that'll be where you lie.
Did you not read or understand Posts #75 and #86? Seems to me that you're the one who could give a shit about reasonable dialogue and would rather trade insults instead. In regard to your insult above, I'm fully capable of having reasonable discussions as you can plainly see throughout this forum. I just choose not to engage with people who lie to me saying that want reasonable discussion and then begin these "discussions" by hurling insults. And lastly, I don't mind insults per se (although I think jabs are more fun), but I do mind your lack of honesty. I've said this plainly several times, yet you still don't seem to get it.

How does one tell the difference?

The liberal brain, unfettered by ideologically induced religious-like reality filtration, is capable of deep pattern recognition that is neither able to be taught to conservatively defective brains nor communicated by any words that such a brain could make sense of. Like the highly trained palate of a professional wine taster, the mechanisms involved are on the one hand highly discriminatory, but on the other ineffable and describable only by fanciful analogies. About the best that can be said is that those who taste know and that those who taste after eating bowls full of conservative altered reality chile taste only what one would expect. Probably why you needed to ask......

Yes, and it completely crippled the voting right act by...striking down a formula that dates back to the civil rights era. The SCOTUS said that for a formula to have current effects, it needs to address current needs. Civil rights problems in 2013 are not in the same galaxy as civil rights problems in the 60s and 70s.

It's ironic that conservatives are the ones criticized for living in the past.

and Republicans are refusing to fix it. They want it to die on the vine.
But it's looking less and less likely that a fix will be agreed to because Republicans have little to gain and a lot to lose politically if they cooperate.

"Ain't gonna happen," Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) said late last week, according to Roll Call

"Hey why would we fix the Voting Rights Act. We don't want those darkies voting anyway. We'll just ignore this and move forward with all the voter ID laws across the country."

Can you imagine all those people who died in the 60s just to have Republicans begin the dismantling of all they fought for. Renewal of the Voting Rights Act has been renewed in the past with almost unanimous support from Republicans. I think they've been lying about how they really feel about it. Didn't want to look bad by voting "no"

If you could transport this Republican house to 1965 the VRA would not pass.

You're right Moonie, such "subtle nuances" are well beyond my ability to reason. But it does impress me that liberals can so easily navigate such complexities by merely firing a few synapses. That's pretty damn awesome!

You clearly have a misunderstanding of what I think a reasonable discussion is. Regurgitating the same tired GOP talking points or coming to any discussion locked and loaded to defend the ridiculous GOp assrtion of the day is not having a reasonable discussion. To be able to have a reasonable discussion you have to be able to know and challenge whatever biases you have.

I guess it makes sense. Being able to spew bullshit in a calm manner is what a reasonable discussion is to you. No wonder why you gravitate to the GOP.

Yet you persist. OK, have it your way. I personally don't think you're intelligent enough to have a reasonable discussion, especially with someone who has different ideas than you hold. Your constant insults reflect the intelligence of a juvenile. Furthermore, your feigned desire to have reasonable discussion is a lie....a lie that you're likely too stupid to understand. If you're a teenager I would cut you some slack. But if you're much older I could only conclude that you're unable to grasp your blatant intellectual dishonesty or intellectual shortcomings.

You don't have different ideas. You have dogma. That you are incapable of piercing through.

Why don't you tell me some more about all the racism you faced growing up in the 60's. Lol.

I'm glad for you.

I am too, but I can demonstrate the validity of what I said:

Fact: Conservatives rationalize away facts that are unpleasant for their egos more than liberals do probably due to differences in the development of the right amygdala and the cingulate. Take the idea of voter fraud.

Conservatives deny this because it reflects badly on their rationality.

Fact: Conservatives can't win elections in which a majority of the population votes. This is especially true among the poor and minorities who vote heavily democratic. It is best for Republicans if only wealthier white people vote. In order to persuade the latter group to vote, conservatives demonize those in the former categories by describing them as 'the takers' etc. The result is a willingness to practice injustice and bigotry, but to do so consciously would hurt conservatives egos. They don't like to see this because they know it makes them what most would call bad people.

Thus, in order to suppress the vote of the 'undesirables' at the polls, a fraudulent lie must be created, the notion that millions of people are going to the polls illegally. The creation of voter ID laws to save us from voter fraud becomes, thus the fiction behind which conservatives hide their evil from themselves.

This is instantly obvious to liberals because, number one, they aren't biased against black and minority voters and have no need for such self deception, and two, they are not inclined, brain wise, to create such deception in the first place. Liberals are naturally more able to see their own warts.

So while conservatives are off on a holy war to rid the polls of illegal voters, liberals know instantly what they are really doing and it is disgusting. Liberals know the smell of that cork every time the cork on that bottle gets popped.

The conservative brain defect of self deception works wonders with conservatives, but is completely transparent to liberals. Sorry, but that's the way it is. The conservative emperor is totally naked in liberal land.

Ah...you're true colors show. I get it now, you're still butthurt for me calling you out for your racism where you made judgments about me based solely on the color of my skin. You're a racist...guilty of the very thing you abhor so much in others....pathetic.

Racism doesn't mean what you think it does. Let me repeat that for the umpteenth time. Racism doesn't mean what you think it does. Your too old to be this dumb. Grow up. And that's sad being that you're close to your 60's if not in your 60's.

The Oxford Dictionary says that you're the stupid one here. I don't know how much more I can take of your idiocy as I get no satisfaction in seeing you publicly embarrass yourself...so get your shots in early and often....let's show the world the true depth of your "intellect".

racism

1 Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior:
a programme to combat racism

1.1 The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races: theories of racism

This is the definion you chose for the word you think you are using correctly.

Now tell me what race you think that I believe African Americans are superior to, that gives you ability to call me a racist.

Like I said you don't understand the meaning of the word you have been attempting to use. It's more amazing you actually put up a definition that makes your use of the word look stupid.

I find it telling that Republicans sent GWB, who is so important to the party that they kept him under wraps the last couple of elections, nowhere to be seen.
But he is one of the least racist Republicans, in spite of his incompetence.

Here's the thread in question if anyone is interested in what emperus and I have been talking about. Don't let the thread title throw you off...emperus says he is NOT a racist. Regardless, it appears that disparaging both WHITES and REPUBLICANS in one fell swoop is like hitting the "Daily Double" in his world. Oh...and please ignore all the people who called him an idiot...I don't think he likes that either.

I asked you one simple question and after hiding for a day, you came back and won't even answer the question. Maybe because you can't answer it because you're use of it is wrong. But, yet you choose to be a tool and continue to use it wrong.

Let's try again.

And I'm glad you brought up that thread. Because as in that one just like this one, you ended being wrong. Only difference is that you admitted it in that one and you're trying to dance your way out of it in this one.

No one needs to look much further than your thread title to immediately suspect racist bigotry. You effectively said that WHITES are hypocrites because some get food stamps. And any one who cares to look further can plainly see how your judged me based entirely on the color of my skin. You have race issues...why do you keep denying it?
