I used to work in our IT dept (of 4 people), until I recently switched to a much better paying position that is still directly IT related (although I am head of IT for a couple of 'high demand' departments..)

Anyhow, since I was the lead guy over there for almost 5 years, I am really good friends with everyone in the dept... except the new guy that replaced me... who is the 'stereotypical' moron IT person.

He's one of these types who cannot acknowledge the possibility he's wrong. He isn't 'lying' per say.. as he legitimately thinks he's right.. but just won't accept other possibilities.

Case in point - they're locking down on wireless access. He notices that one of my dept's has a wireless router (used for off-site training) and takes the antenna. Doesn't say turn it off - doesn't say anything to anyone. This was a couple months back. Now we need it - and "It works fine without the antenna - those are just for show. It has antenna's inside twice as big"

It does have antenna's inside, the external connections are to aid the internal antenna. Also rogue AP's are a huge security risk, I don't know what he means by "the antenna's inside are twice as big" I mean from a physical standpoint that just isn't possible...

Very typical and I'm sure it's not specific to IT but to most fields I'm sure.

Reminds me when I was working at this one place and they hired a new tech and he would brag that he was an MCSE all the damn time yet he couldn't install windows without me helping him or add a network printer without my help, he didn't last to long.

well, with all the test dumps and sh!t like that, anyone can become an mcse. all they have to do is memorize the questions and answers. no knowledge needed whatsoever.

It wasn't on the internal network.

Mainly because they just are retarded.

Reminds me of the time we removed a linksys router from the network and proceeded to stomp it to bits in front of the retard that plugged it in.

**EDIT**
Mostly those guys are trying to compensate for there lack of intelligence by bolstering what they do know, or think they know, to make them feel more intelligent or important. But everyone in every department does that. IT guys just tend to get more flack for it because they deal with everyone, even the ones who are total a-holes.

LOL @ twice as big internal antena.

Every IT dept have some morons like that. I used to work with a guy that really think his DIAL UP is as fast as our T1 line at work. What a moron. Oh, and his solution to every IT problem is to reformat the harddrive and copy the image back.

Unterminated coax is hell on transmitters. It reflects the signal right back to the driver. Kick his ass and put the antenna back on.

I absolutely HATE those types of people! :| I have no respect for someone who think that reformatting a computer is the ONLY solution.. Installing a network printer? Format it! Installing Farcry? FORMAT IT! Check out an ebay auction!? You guess it, FORMAT IT! Most problems on the computer can be solved quite easily, it's those intermittent problems that crop up and don't have a real "defined" issue that are in need of a fresh copy of windows..

In a home situation that really isn't feasible. At an office, you really shouldn't be saving work locally. It is a huge waste of time to try and figure out what the user unknowingly installed/screwed up.

Although a lot of people really are idiots about it..

Don't feel bad. Most of our IT dept is OK but when our help desk dispatches a tech to someones desk, 9 times out of 10 the guy replaces the monitor. And it virtually never changes anything (DUH). So I asked him once why he did that and he explained that he usually assumes the first step is to trouble shoot the display issue (BSOD's, etc) since they are on the screen.
Dead serious here. Guy has been here for seven years and makes in the $50's.

this guy was always doing stupid crap (pluggin in home switches and what not even when told not to) and we had had enough.

His little linksys incident caused tons of problems.

I agree with you that time saving/ easier to do the image rather than trying to figure out what did the user do. But I am talking about this guy is so eager to do the image thing to overcome his lack of experience and knowlege around IT issues.

He just has a highschool education andd barely know enough to solve any IT problems. Yet, he acts like he know everything. After he told me about his dial up speed <as fast as T1 speed>, I just totally ignore him ever since.

<<<---- strongly believe in ****keep mouth shut and let other wonder if you are a moron or open it up and REMOVE all doubts*****
