you guys are fighting over who goes platinum but its not like that anymore. There is tons of great music out there and its not to be found in the major labels. They have pressure to sell massive quantities and they go to the lowest common denominator.

another, be sure to watch the entire video

The classics become so only after they have stood the test of time, so we have no way of knowing what the classics of today will be...we can only guess...the classics of the 90s are only just barely becoming apparent.

It's not there is more crap than before....it's just that the forgettable crap is forgotten. There's a reason in an earlier post Zim Hosein mentioned Led Zep and the Stones, but not Hermans Hermits. For every Led Zeppelin in the mid-60s there were 100 Hermans Hermits...and they usually dominated the charts because their sound and image was constructed, planned and carefully managed purely to sell as many records as possible in as short a time as possible without any concern for creating music of any artisitic merit.

Ahh, OK .. I'll agree with ya, even if I admit to listening to the ultimate pop crafted band of the 60's, the Monkees.

That's my point, they're not putting out good music anymore though, at least not as great as the music they previously put out.

I have little respect for artists who build a career on their past. It's like a former pro athlete making a living signing autographs.
I'm surprised you can hear any music at all with your head so firmly lodged up your ass.

College radio is usually pretentious as fuck and satellite radio has a ton of stations that play nothing good. The music I want to listen to isn't found on the radio. I'd much rather just listen to my own collection on random.
The music you want to hear is on the radio. Maybe it isn't easily found on the radio. Radio makes it possible for anyone, anyone who has access to it, to discover music they would not otherwise be exposed to. As a long time DJ I know that a lot of my listeners know a lot more about a lot of the music I play than I do. They call me all the time and this is clear to me many times. As a DJ I don't have time to dig deep into this and that, I have the overview, so to speak. I'm very eclectic. I know a lot, but I know that I've barely scratched the surface. Music is wonderful stuff!

No mention of Rush yet? Going on their 4th decade and putting out new music and touring this summer. They definitely couldn't start up these days, because they didn't get started really until their 4th album(2112).

Just saw James Taylor and Carole King the other night and the set list could be used as a 'how to' for writing pop songs. They toured with their original band from 1971 and were amazingly tight. These guys(and gal) are well into their 60's.

Rush was mentioned a few pages back and was quickly discredited as not being relevant by JMapleton.

Maturity is not NECESSARILY a prerequisite for entertainment. In fact since the mid 80's it seems the less mature folks are more entertaining overall. Sure they crash and burn like a new Toyota, but its fun to watch the carnage as they go.

Also, if we are ignoring maturity and just looking at age: Tweeny stuff seems to take in more cash. I guess the target market parts with their money easier.

A lot of the stuff you hear on college radio stinks, I agree. But there's a lot of great music, terrific stuff that you will never hear on commercial radio. You pick and choose what you want to listen to. Some DJs have it, some don't. Some are young and shallow, some old and shallow. Some are deep. I have been DJing college radio for about 30 years and I have to say, there's no DJ who's always hot. But I know great radio when I hear it, and the only radio I've heard since the 1970's that's great is college and pirate radio. Well, occasionally some Pacifica.

Agree, WFMU (NY) is great. I work at KALX, Berkeley. We have a pretty great reputation too, and a phenomenal record collection (around 100,000 separate items). There's more than one WFMU DJ that used to work at KALX. The DJs, while having to play 4 "feature" play/hour (i.e. newly released disks/vinyl), are free to play whatever else they want. The management pressures us to not play obscenities, because of the fear of getting fined by the FCC. We also are supposed to have some diversity in our shows, but aside from that, we are FREE! You can dismiss us as pretentious, but that's unfair. If you think you can do a better job, you can join our staff, get trained and be a DJ yourself.
knowing when to tune in is pretty important... as much as I love some of the stuff on WFMU, some of the other stuff is just really fucking out there.

I don't know if it's still on the air, but back when I worked 2nd shift, there was this program that would be on the air as I was driving home at midnight on Friday nights that was basically just incomprehensible noise. (I mean, really, incomprehensible noise... not like metal where I'd describe it as noise just because I don't care for it). it sounded like what I'd imagine music would sound like if computers were writing music for other computers to listen to.

likewise for most college radio stations... different DJ's play different stuff. depending on the day of the week, I'm going to hear hip/hop, folk, indie rock, or j-pop on my morning commute.

Who cares about this trash today? Put in your Hall & oats or Rod Stewart and have a nice day.

This is the beauty of music. Who cares if the stuff today blows? There is so much good music out there, no way can you ever listen to it all. We are fortunate enough to have access to literally everything ever almost instantly. We don't need to listen to what's on the radio.

I have a decent classic rock station that gets a lot of my car time, but if I don't like what's on it I can plug in my ipod and pick from pretty much everything I've ever listened to. That variety makes this the greatest time to be a music fan ever in my opinion. Sure a lot of the stuff released now is mixed too loud, or T-Pain is doing his retarded thing or whatever, but I don't have to listen to it. Find music you like, enjoy it. Not hard.

i don't find it hard to assume that most musicians start playing at some kind of professional (or attempted professional) capacity right after high school on into their 20's. every once in a while one of those newer bands of 25 year olds makes it big, and that's why you see a lot of them. then a lot of those bands age onto into their 30-40's and keep playing music with the same people, some on into their 50's+. has that ever been a big rock band just formed of unknown 'middle aged' people? i'm sure it's happened, but i'd considerate it a rarity.

there are certainly young people out there making good music (though mainstream alt/rock/metal generally all suck), unless you're just referring to pop, which is marketed at like 16 year olds and should not be listened to by anyone anywhere at any time for any reason.
