Rant Why are they killing USAID?

I think this needs its own thread. Since inauguration, the Trump/Musk Regime has waged a largely silent war against USAID. While there are many people who wrongly believe that USAID is a waste of taxpayer money, it is in fact the third leg of ‘3D’ (Defense, Diplomacy, Development) American foreign policy in the modern era. If anything, Defense probably gets too much attention/funding while diplomacy and development are ignored, but I digress. The reality is that the total USAID budget is less than 1% of the total federal budget, while defense is closer to 14%.

President Kennedy initiated USAID to counter Soviet influence around the world in ways that defense and diplomacy couldn’t. I point this out because its very mission was to counter Marxist ideology in promoting development “the American way”, promoting human rights and free enterprise.

On Day One, Trump froze all spending, projects and disbursement of aid for 90 days with zero warning to agency employees, contract implementers or partners around the world. I assume Congressional and International pressure eventually forced him to relent and allow distribution of medicine that was already paid for and would be expired/wasted, but even now orders are unclear with policy changing minute to minute via DOGE emails and tweets. In the meantime, the Regime is continuing with furloughs, mass layoffs and program freezes that will have ripple effects for years to come. Even if life-saving aid is “unfrozen”, the organizations supporting the work on the ground are effectively paralyzed.

By Friday, Senator Chris Murphy was warning that the death of USAID was imminent—the Regime was planning to dismantle the org and subsume its activities under the State Department. Nevermind the fact that USAID already answers to State—but the State Dept doesn’t have the tools or expertise to assume control of development projects. By Saturday, the website was down and some signs removed from USAID HQ.

There is a bigger story here of the Regime moving to illegally shutdown a federal agency with its own Congressional appropriations budget without even cursory approval of Congress. This could have far reaching implications if lawmakers and courts allow this to stand. But the Regime doesn’t care if they eventually fail in court, because the damage will already be done! Any attempt to save USAID 3, 6, or 12 months down the road will be like attempting to resurrect the dead.

Today, we see reporting that USAID security staff stopped DOGE personnel from entering the building last night and accessing secure systems with personnel data. They were doing their jobs—stopping people without clearance from accessing sensitive systems and classified data. And they were fired for doing their jobs. The DOGE employees do not have security clearances. In fact, some of them are barely out of high school and have zero experience with government agencies.

Musk, in an effort to justify his team’s actions, took to X today and called USAID an “evil…criminal organization” and “a viper’s nest of radical-left Marxists who hate America”.

Strong words! Why does Musk hate USAID so much?? Why are Musk and Trump afraid of an independent USAID that isn’t in lockstep with Trump’s/State’s foreign policy?

Answer: Because USAID helped end apartheid in South Africa at a time when the Reagan Administration and State were hesitant to upset the status quo.

Exhibit A: https://adst.org/2021/06/american-peoples-foreign-policy-usaids-role-in-apartheid-south-africa/

My biggest fear isn’t necessarily for my wife’s job or friends’ jobs—but I’m worried the Regime will use this action to justify defunding and closing any other agency they fundamentally disagree with, appropriations from Congress be damned. My other fear is that China will swoop in with Belt and Road projects to replace USAID, and eventually down the line we will be facing a much more overt Cold War over foreign influence. The Regime will use any flexing by China to justify more military build-up, and former allies we were aiding/developing with USAID will be viewed as enemies.

I’m think it’s as simple as Trump wanting to make aid purely transactional. The new admin has no belief in soft power as a tool of international relations.

Is your country starving? What are you going to give us to get food?
The issue is that CHina or Europe can give the help they needs and they have to share their territories to make new military bases.
While the US will lose all the obtained terrain and wants to go the old way: conquer, conquer and conquer.

You’re at the point he makes the other two branches of government pointless. This is the precipice. There is nothing legal about any of this shit.

Yeah, we're rapidly approaching the point where only a few things prevent a full blown, no holds barred repeat of 1933. Only things that can stop something like that would be (in order of likelihood):

1. Financial markets make Shitler and his minions roll back due to instability
2. Courts eventually overrule the really bad parts, but this takes tons of time. Might be too late by then.
3. Guillotines
4. Congress grows a pair (lol)
5. External violence (where we're the bad guys against CAN/MX/Nato/whoever)

Because it is not an endeavor that Putin or Kim Jong Un would do.
The Oligarchs want a nation that gives them all power and all wealth.
"Give to the poors, are you insane?"

This is evil incarnate and must be met with force.

It actually appears that Musk believes in a conspiracy theory that says they are to blame for COVID. Among other things.
I could see that if you also believe Lutheran Family Services is a money laundering operation.

Maybe the drug abuser should be far away from the levers of government.

I mean next it could be everyone with the letter "A" in their name is a secret marxist so he withholds their Social Security payments.

For USAID in particular, you forgot 6. American Evangelical churches begin to lose influence in Africa/Asia and start complaining. Dubya gave them an in with PEPFAR and faith-based aid, and they’ll be reluctant to give it all up to godless China. They already seemingly rescued PEPFAR via Rubio. We’ll see what happens.

It’s a strange day when “elitist” DC liberals are counting on evangelicals to save their jobs!

I t seems Trump and his headhunting squad have taken the humanity out of the gov't and replacing it with a methodology that concentrates the ability to make begging om hand and knee at the foot of Trump's throne the preferred practice to get funding for "pet projects" like infrastructure, etc.

Democrat led states that have provided more than their fair share of tax revenues to the federal gov't are going to be taught a lesson about how being providers for the welfare red states is a duty they need to ramp up and be quick about it and the cut going to Trump's "special needs programs", political campaign donations, philanthropic foundations and the privatized social services that replaced all of the gov't sponsored ones now owned by Musk will be commensurate with Trump's need to punish those blue states for committing acts of treason from voting for anyone else that Trump and his lackeys were running against.

The tip of the 'ol iceberg has risen out of the sea exposing the actual girth of Trump's desire to own America just like his pal Putin owns Russia. The treasury and the military might of America is now Trump's discretionary fund and his personal body guards.

The pro-life party thinks humanity is for losers!

Wish they would pick a conspiracy theory and just stick to it.

Weren't they recently calling COVID not a big deal? And/or that it actually didn't kill that many people after all?
I know what you mean. Used to be you could count on a conspiracy theorist to stick to their guns. Earth is flat? yep, earth is flat. It's not a curve, it's not a dodecahedron, it's not a mobius strip. Just good ol' fashioned flat. Came that way too! Lizard people didn't make it flat. Clintons aren't profiting off it by selling the edges to 2-dimensional beings. Just flat earth. Came flat, is flat, will be flat.

Oh its coming. When they dont have to worry about elections anymore there is no reason to pander to conspiracy bullshit anymore either. If it keeps business open you will get vaccine mandates stuffed down your throat.

I think Musk figured out how much it is going to cost to haul his ass to Mars and thinks the money he is illegally withholding will flow to his project. Musk's being devoid of empathy is a two edged sword. On one hand, he'll cheerfully cut everyone for dead if doing so in any way benefits himself. On the other hand, he is oblivious to the other piggies at the trough. Those other piggies have multi-generational experience in keeping well fed.
