We are 35 T in debt. Something needs to be cut and USAid is not going to be enough.
USAID funds things like disease prevention and mitigation. It literally costs pennies compared to what it would cost if those things became endemic or spread to the US. Or funding food so people don't starve (you know, one of the many reasons people might want to leave their country for another).

And why is the focus only on cutting? Why not increase taxes? I saw someone claim the other day if we rolled back the Trump and Bush tax cuts, we'd be running a surplus.

Speak in language he understands: USAID paid down principal only on a compound interest loan. Now we only make mostly interest payments again.

It's a lot more complicated than that.
Let me ask you this

1. What is the benefit for you to be the worlds dominant trading currency?
2. What is the mechanism for maintaining that situation?

I mean on the face of things you could be way in the red on trade deficits and debt as long as you just print enough new dollars to offset that amount.. plus a little extra maybe.

Wait is that already happening maybe? I will have to dive into that a bit. Do some research.

edit : Do you remember Russia wanting to shift oil away from usd? I think it's a whole BRICS thing. Wonder what that is all about.

These are questions I do not know the answer to. But I do know we have too many pigs feeding on the federal teets and they need to be slaughtered.

So why doesn't Congress just pass a law to cut spending?

The Republicans have the House and Senate, and the Presidency. They don't have to do illegal things to give you the fixes you want. Just pass a law!

How come you had no issues with the debt during Trump's first term, where he added $8.8T of that debt, so why are you worried about it now? If the debt was Trump's priority, why didn't he take steps to fix it during that same first term where he balloned the debt? He's going to do it again, but worse this time, and you will sit there and make excuses for him. Which means your opinion is worthless.

Musk is killing it because it seems that usaid probably helped anti-apartheid stuff in South Africa. And his family was friendly with the pro apartheid crowd.
Bingo. This finally is the answer. Retribution by the shadow president for them helping the anti-a partied side of the fight. This was definitely in America's interest, just not Elon's.

Then the right answer is to pass appropriations bills that remove funding from programs you don't like.

The wrong answer is throwing the Constitution in the trash and establishing a dictatorship.

Guess which one Trump and Musk are going for.

Except lobbyists and said pigs on said teets will not allow Congress to do it, lest they not get the usual bribes and kickbacks.

So we need decisive action by strongmen in government to slaughter the pigs.

Lobbyists aren't stopping anything. Congress as a whole and its members have agency. They aren't NPCs.

By allowing the flagrant law breaking, Trump is basically ripping up the Constitution, and you're not going to put Humpty Dumpty back together.

Hint: because he doesn't really care about it.

I have no trouble responsible cutting of spending but taxed for > 400K need to go up.

Also, end the practice of the rich being paid in stock to avoid their share of the tax burden.

Could just roll back the Bush and Trump tax cuts: https://www.americanprogress.org/ar...ly-responsible-for-the-increasing-debt-ratio/

A series of massive, permanent tax cuts have created large federal budget primary shortfalls and continue to exert upward pressure on the debt ratio. In other words, the current fiscal gap—the growing debt as a percentage of the economy—stems from legislation that cut taxes, disproportionately for the very rich. While it is true that the Great Recession and legislation to fight it, along with the costs of responding to the health and economic effects of COVID-19, pushed the level of debt higher, these costs were temporary and did not change the trajectory of the debt ratio. If Congress wants to decrease deficits, it should look first toward reversing tax cuts that largely benefited the wealthy, which were responsible for the United States’ current fiscal outlook.

These tax cuts have done long-term damage to federal revenue, more so than any spending growth FDC is ranting about.
