I remember reading an Anandtech article that made some vague statement along the lines of "if the monitor industry was anything like the CPU industry, there'd be 40" monitors with ~4,000x2560 pixel resolution" which begs the question, why isn't it?

that doesn't beg the question.

I'm curious as to why more monitors don't use IPS panels. You get IPS panels in HDTVs for relatively low prices that are superior to many PC monitors. Why continue to use cheap TN panels in them?

I would love to have a monitor that got rid of the bezel in between my 2 monitors, but that is unlikely to happen with the slow pace that displays have taken. Would be nice to set the game or main window in the center and use the sides as browsers/whatever. Granted I could just buy another monitor, but there would be another bezel that I cannot seem to mentally block.

I'm happily sitting in front of a 27" 1920x1200 monitor, and I'm not wishing for anything bigger or smaller.

Aside from a few technical showdowns where a massive 8k monitor/TV is unveiled every so often, why isn't a monitor larger than 30" being rolled out? I would have thought that by now monitors would be increasing past the 30" marker, if not by 5 inches, then at least by 1 or 2.

The 2011 AOC 21.5" LED monitor has a higher resolution (1080P) than my 2005 22" Dell (1680x1050) I mean what the hell?

Why aren't all the big wigs like Dell, Asus, NEC, and HP getting their act together and rolling these bad boys out?

Here ya go.

Something like a 40" LCD TV might be nice if it offered a Split screen monitor option. Could probably do that with software or some kind of driver option. Depends on perspective. The problem is often a Monitor usually has better color and less white-out. Some LCD TV's tend to wash out and have less color definition. You cant tell without putting a TV right next to a monitor.

TVs use a much larger variety of panel types and technologies behind them. LG HDTVs are good to use as a monitor since they offer S-IPS panels with 4:4:4 chroma through DVI/HDMI and perfect 1:1 pixel mapping. The xxLD450s are very popular for monitor usage (Link). Put a LG 32LD450 next to any TN 27" and you would have to be crazy to choose the TN. That is if the 32" LG has the S-IPS and not something else from the panel lottery.

Why should displays get larger? What practical reason is there?

i already have a 30" 2560x1600 display - and if i want, i can wrap myself up in 10 feet of horizontal 6000x1080 display with 5x1 Eyefinity

Huh? Wheel wells limit a tire size. There's no wheel well so to speak with monitors.

There is no "wheel well" but there is a practical limit to what will fit on a typical desk which amounts to the same idea. Given the pair of 24 inchers I use at work, if I were to go to a 30 inch or larger, I would have to go to a single monitor configuration as at the 30 inch level only one would physically fit. Given the choice of one 30 vs two 24's I would choose the dual monitor configuration every time.
