Oh, ol' joke by forget who. Some comedian.

What black man, in their right mind, is going to skate around with a bunch of white guys carrying sticks?

I can picture the comedian in my head (very famous black comedian) but the name escape me.Chris Rock maybe?

I'd say #3 but less and less - it's also interest for sure. Now that there are quite a few black players in the league, you'll start to see more and more as the years pass... yet the money factor will remain the same for everyone. It's the genuine interest and lust for the sport that makes an NHL-calibre hockey player - so not only do they have to like the game to start off, they'd have to excel at it to get anywhere. Chances are of course against them (and most minorities not as exposed as your typical Canadian/Russian/Swede kid with a frozen pond out back).

There aren't that many blacks in hockey?

I didn't notice at all. I'm totally colorblind to race

the lack of popularity of Hockey in the US

I don't know about that, there are definitely more US-based NHL teams, and I'm sure more American players than Canadians.

Most of those US Teams are struggling to survive. Canadian players certainly dominate at the NHL level.

Thats because of over expansion. The NHL was stupid to expand as fast as it did.
Money and big TV contracts is what brought NHL franchises to American cities. Back in the expansion years, there was really no choice but to start down south because of the bigger markets. Actually Vancouver should have got their NHL team a bit sooner but had to wait a couple years because the US market was more attractive in terms of money-making potential.

And sm8000: there are far more Canadians in hockey than Americans.

Chris Rock did a sketch on Saturday Night Live years ago, called "The Dark Side With Nat X." On this show within a show, he did a top five list about this very topic.

All right now, it's time for the Top 5. Why 5? 'Cause 10 would make the Man nervous. Tonight's the Top 5 Reasons Brothers don't play hockey. Reason #5: It's cold out there; Reason #4: They scared to get their gold tooth knocked out; Reason #3: Don't want to be around white guys with sticks; Reason #2: Don't want to be around a white guy with a mask; and the #1 Reason Black Guys Don't Play Hockey: Don't feel the need to dominate yet another sport. And that's the Top 5 - that's all I could get from Whitey at this time.

Transcript of the whole sketch.

Kevin Bacon as Vanilla Ice was great in that segment, as well.

Why is the cost of equipment even an issue when it's provided by the clubs or schools?

All of your points probably have some truth to them. 10 years ago I don't think there was a single non-white player in the NHL. Today there are several. In years to come there are going to be more and more. Living in Toronto (a city with large non-white population) I can attest that hockey is becoming ever more popular with first and second generation Canadians.

Since when is it provided? Every select team I've played on (not hockey) I've provided my own gear, paid membership dues, etc. It's not like playing street hoops with the neighborhood kids where you just need shoes and a ball.

Because unless you are getting paid to play... it's not! If you want to get setup with new equipment you're looking at $600-$1000. If you have a kid in hockey, They grow out of it yearly. But because of this there is a fairly large market in used equipement (as long as you can deal with the smell, lol).

But what's the difference between this and football? Expensive stuff as well, right?

When I was a kid in the early 60s, we used to joke about black people not being in hockey because they don't like to be whitewashed.

The joke was actually in French and the term 'blanchis' literally means bleached.

Without being prejudice, young blacks have migrated towards basketball.

Baseball has been feeling the crunch as well, as 25% in MLB used to be black, now its <10%, which is very unfortunate.

LOL - that's laughable. There were plenty of black guys in the NHL in 1997.

You don't find many black people in the colder climates where skating is big. I thought everyone knew this?
