Why aren't we building 24hr DayCare Centers??

I was at a family reunion in Stockton California, and a bunch of my family members were talking about how hard it was to juggle raising children and working.

Their was a lot of things they talked about but what stood out to me was they all agreed that 'if you don't have a partner or family members it was nearly impossible to have a full time job because you will be too busy taking care of the child'.

I asked "Can't you put the child in DayCare while your working?"

They told me that their only available for a short period during the day and you usually cant be on time if you have to commute from the DayCare-Job-DayCare-Home, they also said that it was impossible to work the night shift because their not available at that time period.

I then asked "Aren't their any 24hr DayCares?"

They all looked at me like I just uttered the most retarded statement they ever heard in their lives and yelled "NO!".

Later I Googled if their was any 24hr DayCares, their was none anywhere close to my area, I did see some ones that offered 'evening' care but it was not '24 hours'...

I really think if we built 24hr DayCare Centers that are institutionalized it would greatly improve the Economy because people would be more free to Work and maybe even go to School.

What do you guys think?

Huh? You shouldn't be asking us what we think... you should be providing the market with what it needs and becoming a multi millionaire. I'm sure some thinktank has a crawler that has found your idea and is already deciding if it's profitable or not.

Or rather, that's how it will work one day in the future lol.

Good idea though, I'd work on actually doing it rather than telling people =D.

There are...or at least their used to be. However, I would imagine it woudl be cost prohibitive for many people.

Because most parents use daycare for the day. I would imagine not that many people would be dropping off their children at 9pm at night and picking them up at 7am for example.

Also, it would be too disruptive to the child's sleep.

Come to think of it, I hope they never come out with 24 hour day care.

I worked third shift for years when my kids were young. I did it because once they got off to school I could sleep for a few hours, plus the night shift dif helped my budget. A lot of private babysitters will work overnights because their responsibility ends early in the day. I would drop my kids off at 9pm, they had been fed, bathed & were in PJ's. The mother would wake them in the morning, feed them and get them on the school bus. Babysitter responsibilities then over. I paid a bit more for overnight care but it was worth it. My kids were safe and there were minimal hassles with the babysitter. After awhile, she would even pitch hit on sick days etc.

They already have one near the Mohegan Sun casino for the casino employees. I'll bet that they have them in Vegas as well.

Kind of sad, but they work weird hours there.

Daycare is most always only available to accommodate a regular day shift. The lady that watches my kids is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

far to expensive to do for very few children. Though i am sure there are private daycare providers that will do it.

I was thinking a person could leave the child there all day and night, maybe for years at a time.

If the child is under 3 years old I highly doubt it could tell the difference.

If you need 24hr day care you probably should have or have had children.

I want kids in the future but I don't want "babies". I would like to put the infant in 24hour daycare and keep them their until their like 3 years old.

There's 2 providers in town that do this. The charge is generally slightly more than day daycare.

I think there is no excuse for an unplanned pregnancy and that you shouldn't have kids without having planned for a way to raise them yourself. Using a day care center is not an acceptable part of the plan.

I have a friend who used to work as a nighttime babysitter for a single-parent who worked nights... she'd go over as the mom was leaving for work (~11 pm) and her only job was to just sleep and be there in case the kids woke up.

pretty sweet gig.

Most people with planned pregnancies do use daycare centers. Using a daycare allows for more income. The child can be raised in a better neighborhood, go to better schools, and have help with college. It also allows them to interact with other children while they are growing, and not be shy or socially awkward.

There's a 24 hour daycare near LAX. Never knew such a thing existed until I happened to drive by one day. As others have said, not a great situation but sometimes you just don't have a choice.

you can have a planned pregnancy and still end up as an unplanned single parent.

Unless one has professional income, quality day care costs usually eat up much of the disposable income of the worker.

Different than dropping kids off at a local for babysitting services

I've always worked with others who have kids and it is indeed a pain in the ass to juggle work and bringing kids to daycare. I think it comes to show just how broken our society system is. One should not be stuck having to go to work every single day while letting someone else raise their child. What ever happened to the old fashioned way where the mother stays at home and the dad brings in the money? Now cost of living is so high while salaries don't increase that both parents have to work.

The worse thing with daycare is if the kid has a slight cough or sign of getting sick they want you to come pickup the kid. Now what do you do? I can understand why, because otherwise all the other kids will get sick, but if both parents work where do you bring the kid now?

Personally though if I was married and planing on having kids I'd try to plan so the wife can stay home and actually raise the kid instead of spending time dropping/picking up from daycare. But I imagine for people living in big cities that's not an option since cost of living is just too high for a single income to pay the bills. Even here you need a good job for that and 99% of jobs I see posted everywhere are minimum wage. I got lucky with my job.

I believe they call these "live-in nannies."

Fairly recently on the news, there was a story about how a couple in Canada "couldn't find" a Canadian nanny and were "forced" to look for a foreign nanny. Something about how no Canadian had the "qualifications" (early childhood education degree?).
