VB is far superior to fuse talk, VB has tons more options and way more modifiable. they been saying they are gonna update it for a year now at least, ill believe it when i see it. This forum has been broken for months if not years.

Customization and mods are not something we need. If you need any proof of this go check out some of the abortions of color and flashing pictures most forums are.

No, but vB is rock stable and has by far the best back end of any forum package I've seen. It works and it's easy to keep it working.

I still don't get why everyone is afraid of custom avatars. You can disable viewing of avatars and inline images in your control panel. They can even be disabled by default, and anyone wanting to see avatars (I certainly want custom avatars) can enable them.

Plus there can be limitations regarding size and content.

because it doesn't time warp, the search works, and the moderation tools aren't a joke. Oh yeah and the people who make the software actually give two shits and fix things in a timely manner.

so you are a moderator?

nice to know.

Who really gives two shits about time warpers though...it's just fuckers living in their basement with nothing better to do than exploit timestamps.

OH NOES, SOMEONE POSTED ABOVE ME!!!!!

Search has worked fine for me, I am sure it's lacking for those that love to post 'repost' though or play Sherlock Holmes on someones life.

ATOT can be searched via google pretty damn easy now.

Are you a mod here? Ever try to administrate a FuseTalk forum vs a vB forum? vB is light years ahead of FuseTalk for those who have to operate it. Why are you getting your panties into such a bunch about a forum making an intelligent decision to move to better software? Unless you're an investor in FT your whining seems misplaced.

I give a shit about time warping because it really reduces the readability of threads, and it makes the forums look like a frigging joke. and I assure you that I don't mess around with the timestamps and my posts still time warp.

a working search is great when you want to find answers to questions that have probably already been asked. there's a lot of information on these forums beyond funny videos and people blogging about their lives, and a working search makes it accessible.

Search hurts FS/FT forum pretty bad, not just calling reposts.

And Google doesn't cache everything, nor is it the ideal solution. Working search should be integrated in the forums. This is a computer site, you would think we could get properly working forums and not have to deal with all the things that "break" in the forums every couple of months.

Also, on more than one occasion, it's been proven that there are major security flaws that can be exploited in FT.

The forums also aren't supported well by FuseTalk, and over the years they haven't been helpful with ongoing issues. Software that isn't supported is usually best discarded in favor of better supported software, especially when we don't have a team of programmers to fix everything.

Just because the forums are to your satisfaction doesn't mean everyone here is pleased. And what matters most, anyway, is what the admin and owner think, and they are the ones who ultimately decided that we need to move to vB.

Speed seems ok.

Looks like the cartoon version of anandtech forums.

This version is proof of concept, right?

I also loathe VB's layout. The broken search and timewarps are awful here, though. The two other forums I frequent are both VB and it's just ugly.

I think this switch is going to be the end of ATOT for me as well. I don't know what I'll do with my time now that I won't be here. Maybe I'll go outside.

over moderating?

so let's change the software for 99% of the people because it's better for less than 1% of them?

In reality though it seems like half of the users here are mods nowadays or can moderate through a buddy.

The look and feel of forums are a lot of their success. When AT goes vB it is going to be another cookie cutter site.

On top of that, I seriously doubt we will get to use any of the improvements over fusetalk except the 'search'.

The search function in fusetalk should be easily fixed whether by a customized search all together or tweaking the built in one. It's not rocket science.

IMHO the search works fine and it's the idiot user that fails in setting it up properly. It's like the people that cry they can never find things on Google.

Fusetalk search sucks. It's pretty obvious that it does when you have to use Google to find a thread.

I can't wait for VB personally. AT is the only forum I am on that does not use it. FT was good when it came out but now it's unmaintained and full of bugs nobody is going to fix. VB can't come fast enough.

FYI: vB is susceptible to timewarping too. One of the other forums I occasionally visit runs a current version of vB, and has been rather ripe with timewarps lately.
