I paid around $900 for my "cheap plastic Dell." The 1st Asus, if comparably equipped, is $1385 and it has an inferior screen, which is one of the 700m's strong points.

hmm. it seems like dell has magical coupons.

Show me a 17" notebook with a 6800 Go or better vid card for $1000. I haven't found one other than the 9300.

It's all about the specials and coupons...

Got my Inspiron 6000 for around $800 shipped on one of those $750 off $1500 deals. Pentium M 1.6GHz, 256MB RAM, DVDROM/CDRW drive, 128MB X300 video, 40GB 5400RPM HDD, 15.4" widescreen, high capacity battery - that itself was $99 of the total so really this was a $700 notebook. Got a 512MB DDR2 SODIMM from Newegg for about $60 shipped and now have 768MB RAM.

Problem being that your Asus comes with no cpu no ram and no Hdd and on the higher one still lacks 128mb of ram on the vid card... Im no dell fan but can see where the deals are.

Yeah, once you add everything to either Asus, it's not going to be much of a better deal than the Dell.

if price is not an issue, quality is. Quality matters. Dell, Gateway? Cheaply made. No offense.
Price-GM vs. Toyota,
Quality-GM vs. Toyota. calculate these 2 and you will have equilibrium price and demand i guess.

WEll, i guess people did purchase more GMs when the "employee discount for everyone" was in effect.
I just don't like those big, none notebook making companies. I and people i know have bad experiences with their products.
*edit ing dell.
nevertheless, good debate.

i've found dell laptops to be just as reliable as any other laptop making

large amounts of business firms have switched over to dell laptops b/c of great prices and reliable products.

if you want to argue GM vs Toyota, I would choose Dell vs IBM

asus' market is too small to truly know how they would stack up to dell if they had to mass produce

Dell, Sony, HP, IBM have contracts with Asus to make some of there models.
You can usally tell which models
well, dell, hp, and IBM dont make their own laptops anymore, and they haven't been for years. That is why they are called "name branded."
As for big firms, I have worked at big firms for years and I can tell you the only good thing they got was the price. The price is debatable since when something goes wrong with the machines, firms loose money. just my 2 cents

I don't believe you are correct about Dell and Asus having a contract, prove me wrong. As far as yor previous comment about "I know somone who had a problem with their products", c'mon at least try to get some credibility with your statements. It's not a news flash or a point of contention to say that there are people with problems, there are millions of units out there.

This topic is really nonsense. Buy your Asus the rest of the world will make their own decisions.

Are really trying to float the idea (turd) that Asus notebooks are "better" than Thinkpads or Latitudes? Seriously?? - my friend, there's an old adage that?s more often true than not.. you get what you pay for. And if you don't follow that logic here's another adage that'll then be applicable.. you can lead 'em to water but ya' can't make 'em drink.

Happy Asus! :disgust:

Because i bet the average user has no idea about what to look for in a laptop, they just want a computer to carry around. They probably hear the name DELL five hundred times a day and they say hmm " i think ill get a dell" No research done.

WRONG. Your HUGE jump in logic is glaring evidence of the fact that you obviously haven't a clue as to how manufacturing sub-contracts work. - That's like saying since these bad-ass rubber super-balls were made in the same plant as these Michelin tires were, they must be GREAT quality super-balls!.. again, that's not the way it works.

Even if both are assembled by the same contractor, in the same factory, components may be different. Especially LCDs, optical drives, power management circuitry, etc. Even if those were the same, the quality control processes can be different.

The big companies have to pay for warranty repairs on the stuff they sell. So Dell's contracts with the manufacturer states that all laptops assembled for Dell must have a first-year failure rate of less than 5%, a DOA rate of less than 1%, or whatever. Maybe Emachines' contract only specifies a 10% first year failure rate. (Just to pick some brands and numbers.) So when Asus or whoever goes to build a Dell-branded laptop, it uses the higher-quality optical drives, tests them more thoroughly before shipping them. Maybe it builds them on the newer line which has higher-precision robots. Who knows. Point being, there are lots of ways to shave off the cost even in the same factory.

As much as I like Asus products, thats an unfair comparison. The 256MB 6800 Go sported in the i9300 is far superior to the 6600/X700 offered in the Asus systems. Also, the 17in WS display offered on the i9300 is superior to both those Asus models. 17in@1920x1200 versus 15.4in@1680x1050 and 17in@1400x900. Shoot, 1400x900 is a funky resolution anyway. My current 15.4in screen is 1400x1050 and looks great. 1400x900 stretched over a larger screen is going to look bleh.
