Why can't all states pass this law?

Old news I know, but Nice Story

Shipley said although many of the drivers she's stopped for left-lane driving don't have a reason for driving there, others say they were deliberately driving under the speed limit in the left lane in an effort to prevent others from speeding.

"They don't need to be playing police," Shipley said. "That's not their job."

First time I agreed with a cop.

i pretty much only drive in the left lane, however i normally go about 8 mph over the speed limit, its more convinent because i rarley have to move over for someone going faster then me instead of moving out and back in whenever there is a slow person, i dont have to deal with trucks in it and its about 10000x less bumby then teh right lanes

Alright, the left lane is not there to make your life easier. I don't know where you live, but wherever I've been, 8 mph over the speed limit is the flow of traffic, if not a little slower. So, if you aren't passing people, get the hell out of the left hand lane. It's just a pet peeve of mine, people being in the left hand lane when the other lanes are moving just as fast as them, the occasional truck not withstanding.

Doesn't do any good to have a law like that. My state has a law that says if you are driving in the left lane you cannot impede traffic, even if that traffic is traveling above the speed limit.

The left lane is still full of asshats driving the speed limit or below. Makes for a good case of road rage.

That may be annoying and wrong behavior, but you could just add it to a long list of violations I see daily that don't get enforced. If the government was more serious about traffic safety than commerce, licenses would be pulled left and right.

Man, I wish that they would implement that law here in AZ. I drive about 25 miles to work at night, coming in from outside of the metro area, and about everyday I get stuck behind some farkhead that thinks that they can use the left lane to cruise in. Sometimes I luck out and they either speed up to the flow of traffic, but most of the time I end up having to pass them on the right in order to get past them.

Then again, I wish they had way stricter procedures to get your license here - implementing Germany's driving rules and procedures would make life nice for alot of us (and get a lot of the crackheads out there off the roads).

lets see, i drive 8mph over the lmit and have in every state north of SC and east of OH and i pass 90% of the people on the road, the other 10% i move over for, i usially end up staying in the right lane then untill i need to pass someone, however if the road sucks like many do around here i will move back out into the left lane, because the right one is like driving on a dirt road at 75mph

i drive in the left lane a lot because i drive faster than people in the other lanes. but i'm only going like 8-9 mph over the limit (wheras other lanes generally drive 0-5 mph over), so sometimes people tailgate me, in which case i try to let them pass if i can. imo, those people drive too fast, but whatever, they get ticketed every now and then.

Many states already do, it's just that they aren't enforced. link

I love driving in the left lane, but I'm usually going 15mph over the limit...

Its an open highway, and I have eyes like a hawk for cops...

Not been pulled over yet...

Good point. I actually went and looked up the laws for AZ and found that it is a law here. Given that I've seen people do more than 20+ over the limit and run red lights in front of cops without getting into trouble, it would be expecting a bit much to have those laws enforced.

Okay, lemme see if this makes sense:

A cop is following behind you - far enough back that you don't notice, and you are doing 10 over. You pull into the left lane and begin to tailgate some 'asshat' that is doing the speed limit, or a bit above. He observes you purposely getting close to this guy's rear-end, and maybe even flash your lights.

What's he going to do? Pull that guy over? Ha - right!

We in Michigan do not have such a law, but purposely violating the speed limit gives you no more right than the guy holding up the left lane. Both are guilty in breaking the 'law', if such a law exists.

You know the cop in the situation above will pull the real 'asshat' over.

Of course captain obvious...who is creating more danger? The tailgator, but that doesn't justify the dumbfvck that wants to be a wannabe cop.

One thing I like about my town (Huntsville, Alabama) is the cops are incredibly lazy for the most part, and traffic law enforcement cameras are still illegal statewide (the last bill introduced got voted down, and most likely the bill coming up regarding cameras will be shot down as well). I've never been pulled over for anything under 20 or so over the speed limit (which is too easy to do because we don't have any traffic probs), and they usually only start pulling more people over around election time..
The bad side to that though is that you get used to ignoring the speed limits, then when you drive through a small town in the area, you end up getting a ticket.

well here we get reduced numbers of highway patrol but increased numbers of camera's...not so much in the interest of saftey, but in the interests of the governments wallet!

I use the left lane to pass and the right lane to cruise. If I'm not actively passing someone, I'm in the right lane.

Unfortunately, where I live there are a lot of people who drive very slow, so I end up being in the left lane a lot.

Sometimes it can be fun, if a person is in the left lane being a moron, to go around them and cut them off to teach them a lesson.
