Why can't I grasp Linux?

I have been working with computers for quite a while and at times I enjoy a challenge. However every single time I try to mess with it I get frustrated. My main frustration is that everything seems to have a dependancy. Another frustration is that every help document on the web seems to be written by guys that know what they are doing and don't want you to. Its like a club, and the only way to get in is to figure it out for yourself.

I spent 5 hours earlier today trying to get Kopete to work with no luck, it's dependant on one program that I found is dependant on two others.

Lost, don't know if I'll continue with this. My hat is off to those of you that work with it all the time.

Sounds like you're using an RPM based distro like Redhat/Fedora or Mandrake.

Because it sucks and you need Windows. Windows misses you. :brokenheart:

Suse. I have tried Redhat and Mandrake in the past.

you named it Linux? In any regard, you can't grasp it because it's too small...

Description: Gentoo Linux uses an enhanced BSD ports-style package system. You'll want to consult Gentoo's web site or the forums here before doing an install. This distro isn't designed for ease-of-install or simplicity, but it does allow a great deal of flexibility in both installation and maintenance.

Gentoo sounds like loads of fun!

kopete was installed by default on my suse 9.0 installation. If it wasn't, you should have been able to add it in yast painlessly without worrying about dependencies.

Get rid of dependency hell, Debian is probably the route you should go, or Gentoo if you want to get in a little deeper and understand the core of linux. It's quite a learning experience to build from a Stage1 Gentoo. Personally I like Gentoo, but Debian has better dependency handling for the novice.

Yes, but it is an old version and I couldn't log into Aim or Yahoo, so I was trying to either update or reinstall, no go on either.

But once it's installed it's easy to install new software/keep things updated (dependencies are handled for you).

Debian is also nice.

I also agree w/ the OP. I have tried Linux, and from what I can do so far, I really like it. But dependencies kill me. I guess I just stick with Windows because I know how to manipulate it to do what I want.

Do I have to turn in my geek license now?
