Why can't my unlocked Duron go over 800?!

My Duron refuses to boot at 850 even at 1.75 volts... The computer wont boot at all even if I increase the voltage even more. I have the Vantec Socket A BIG cooler and the temps aren't too high so it's not a cooling problem.

Just keep messing with combinations, they're weird like that.
Mine wouldn't do 750 until like 1.65.

Yeah, I can't seem to get any higher than 850 MHz@1.75v. It runs between 49-52 degrees C at idle. Once I jack it up to 900 MHz1.85v, it won't even post. Seems like I need better cooling.

mine runs at 950 *9.5x100* at 49C up to 54C running 4c5, surfing, mp3'ing, and unrar'ing 3 dc games.

1.85V.

Week 29

Some people get a better chip i guess.

the 950 was necessary for me because i was going from a celeron 950 -> duron 950 so anything less would have been pointless.

Try higher settings, or re do the L1 bridges. My Duron 600 will do 900, but won't do 700 or 800. It'll even do 1000, but not 700 or 800. I haven't tried redoing the bridges, so I'm not sure if it'll work or not, but I've heard of other people having it work.

Id say redo those bridges, i think from the reading ive seen, temperature isnt going to stop it overclocking severly. The article on PCscoop said he put his heatsink on backwards and still ran Quake 3 during testing with temps of 200 fareinheht (however you spell that americanism)

Im running my Duron 600 at 1 Ghtz at 1.75 volts temps 50 ish

But i had it running to 900 mhtz without having to alter the voiltage at all !!

I have a tower case 300W power supply, 2 intake and 1 exhaust fan plus a thunderbird retail cooling fan on the CPU just in case you want to know.

I use a KT7-raid and penciled in all the L1 bridges carefully and I can't even overclock the Duron 600 to 650! Something must be wrong.

Funny thing is that no matter how I change the multipler AND the core voltage in bios, they always stay at 600 and 1.5v once booted into Windows and check with Sandra, etc.

The failure to overclock is confirmed by Sandra's benchmark readings.

Do I have a detective board, or I am just not cut out to penciling bridges? I can take the latter, but I can see a lot of hassle if it's the former.

Help!

I would def try re-penciling the L1 bridges. Get a good sharp #2 pencil. And dont be a pansie about it. Really cover those bridges! You will need enough graphite from the pencil to conduct current so the bridges are closed. Run the pencil back and forth across those bridges for a while to really build up the abount of graphite. If you make a mistake, use the eraser to clean it, and rubbing alcohol to clean any eraser residue.

wkc - If its not coming up past 600, then you bridges are def. not closed. You could try a different brand of pencil, or one of those rear window defogger repair kits to close those bridges. i recommend the pencil, as its easier to fix mess ups. Where as the defogger kit WILL require some type of solvent to remove it once its dried

Ogo,

Does the motherboard have a higher voltage setting than 1.75v? I can get my Duron 600 to 850 at 1.75 on my Abit KT7, but that's it. Try seting your voltage to 1.8v or 1.85v if the mobo supports it. Also, is it an OEM or retail Duron CPU?

It's an OEM, I have thermal paste applied too, the Mobo is an A7V and ca go up to 1.85 but the wird thing is that when I went from 750 to 800, it booted but failed to load windows completely whilst when I put 800 it wont boot at all.

Ogo,

First try doing it at 1.85v and see if it runs. If it does not, I would definitely suspect that your chip is not capable of running any faster.

Granted that many other people have had more success, you must keep in mind that a LOT of people are experiencing the same barrier that you are. Another thing to think about is that seeing that your Duron came unlocked (yes, I did read your message), it came from an early batch. The earlier batches most likely are lower yield, thus resulting in a lower max OC.
