Why can't these par files recreate a darn thing?

I have a bunch of rars for a file, and a bunch of pars that went along with it (par2), and using quickpar I run through the index file and it says "needs 36 more blocks". This seems incredibly lame to me, because only one of the rar files is damaged (it's half full) and TONS of par2 files came along, and yet they can't repair even a single .rar? The entire set (when I first started the index file) was talking about 1600+ blocks, so damn near the entire volume of rars is good, and these par2's can't seem to fix one that's at half size. Grr!

OK, it seems that each of the par subvolumes has a master file, and then the little files for each volume are empty. That doesn't seem right...

They should work if all the parts are okay.

If all files are in the same directory, doubleclick the par2 file. When Quickpar runs, it should tell you which rar's AND which par2 repair files are okay. If a file is corrupt, Quickpar will say something like "15/30 complete" which means for that rar, 15 more pieces are needed. One thing to note is that Agent does not handle corrupt files correctly. So be aware of that if you use that newsreader. Anyway, in the above example, if a total of 15 pieces were needed, I could just get download the 1st 4 repair files since they total 15(1+2+4+8). Then, I would doubleclick the "nterVr.par2yEnc" file again. Quickpar should then fix the 15 corrupt parts. Of course, Quickpar cannot repair a set of rar's if it does not have enough par2's. So in the above example, Quickpar could not fix the volume if more than 28(1+2+4+8+13) sections were bad.

Thanks, pretty, i'm going to revisit this with grabit. In fact I have been using agent, and apparently it's not the best NG reader to use for my purposes, so I'll retry the pars with grabit later on

Agent only has problems with corrupt rar's. Let's say that a single rar has 30 parts. If part #2 is bad, Agent stops trying to save anything past #2 even though #3-30 are fine. One way around this is to manually save the file and process them with a stand-alone yenc utility. Anyway, if you try to redownload the file again with another news client, just download the rar's or par2's that were bad according to Quickpar. Then, gather all the rars and par2's into one directory and let Quickpar do the repair work.

what news reader is recommended other then Agent? I think ive seen many files that were ok but Agent just said: "to hell with you"

Just found GrabIT and installed. I have to say within minutes it was configured and working. Its quite nice to beable to download files that were otherwise seen as incomplete by Agent and unusable! Thx for the head up on this. I would have otherwise just kept using Agent not knowing there was somethign way better out there.
