I think it's his back surgery. He just doesn't feel the same and it has screwed up his swing. (less power throws everything off)

To his credit, he is still an amazing golfer... just not compared to the best golfers in the world.
And this US Open is on an amazingly difficult course.

I watched for an hour or so yesterday and saw his triple bogey.
It seemed more than half the field was putting their tee shots in the bunkers.

The bunkers cover like 50% of the course, the fairways are like concrete, the extreme elevation changes and the non-descript greens make for some fun to watch golf.

Only 2 players worse. He beat Fowler and a club pro, nobody else.

Golf is a funny thing, when it goes it can go completely and almost overnight. Guys are world beaters one day, get the yips, their confidence disappears and they never contend again. Tiger is a complete basket case, he's got middle-age 'roid body breakdown and huge mental problems with the short game. So he can't hit it straight, can't chip, can't putt and can't fix any of it.

I think the back thing has been huge. He's said as much, and now it is probably compounded by a loss of self-confidence. In athletics, and really any activity requiring high levels of physical skill and coordination, knowing you can do it is half the battle.

The other side of it is that the competition has gotten better. Tiger was the Michael Jordan of golf. He ushered in a new style and new mentality to the game. Tiger was athletically ripped and built while he was playing against guys like (fat) Phil Michelson, Jon Dally. Pro golfers used to (and some still do) smoke like chimneys while they played. Guys nowadays are working out like a young Tiger did in his heyday.

Then came the injuries. The personal issues etc etc.

That being said, he's still one of the greatest ever. In fact he probably was the brightest burning star ever to play -- he just didn't have the longevity like some of the other all time greats.

Mental is always a part of golf but I think Tiger's problem is primarily due to injury. I do think we will see this type of injury concern more with the post-Tiger generation than with pre-Tiger golf world. Mainly due to how physical the game has become.

Bad knee and back. You just can't play golf well with a bad back. He also fired Butch Harmon and "reinvented" his swing. Maybe he had to due to injuries. Anyway, he will never be very good again.

And yet a punch from Tyson today could still knock your head into the next county. Just like how Tiger would demolish 99.999% of people in the world. At that level a paper thin drop in performance takes you from first to last. Sprinting and swimming are other good examples.

and this... aside from his desire to be active he has no need unless he wasted all of those millions in tournament winnings and endorsements... which I doubt, he may have been dumb about his relationships but probably was smart enough to invest his earning and winnings properly.
