Because what you want to do and what pleases you will affect what other people want to do and pleases them. And vice versa.

Every rule we have at one time arose organically from observation of human tendencies to do things that are not beneficial to themselves and/or society as a whole.

For instance the laws regarding stealing would not exist of no one had ever stolen anything. They might not even exist if stealing happened, but only extremely rarely. It is a fact that, if it goes completely unrestricted, theft would probably be chief among every individual's concerns. No one would be able to amass much wealth or security because doing so would attract predators from all sides. Life would be a constant scrabble for available resources without many new resources being produced.

It is easy to understand why we might want to reduce theft as a thing that people have to worry about. If you're not as concerned about people suddenly stealing you blind, you have a lot more freedom to apply yourself to making your life better and producing things that make other people's lives better.

It a punishable rule against theft which makes that possible. To a greater or lesser degree every other rule and law has a similar justification. I'm not saying that all of them are right, but the principle can be demonstrated to be sound.

OP nothing is stopping you from pursuing your liberal arts degree. You're even free to get a job at Starbucks afterwards if you'd like.

yeah.. so this is why we always existed in social groups. I guess we can go back in time and see if homo erectus had a state of nature. maybe that's why he invented Acheulan hand axes. made a nice weapon, but became handy as a tool once "society" was formed.

The limitations we impose on our selves. It's quite easy to break the rules if you have a spine. The real issue I have with society is the massive amount of paperwork, maintenance on shit you own, working full time, schoolwork, holidays/birthdays/anniversaries/school-ceremonies, BLAH BLAH BLAH. Jesus Fucking Christ. I just want to move to the fucking beach and work at Taco Bell or some shit. :'(

yeah.. as if "empathy" or "compassion" matter.

Empathy and compassion are relative depending on the person. And many people care more about "doing what they please in life" than empathy and compassion to others.

If one could guarantee empathy and compassion to all, from all, then no, we do not need laws, norms, or limits. But one can't, so we do.

I'd suggest you do some reading on the social contract, but I already know you don't care or give a shit.

who is to say we need any "norms" or "limits"?

Norms, or limits, came about from the drive to survive.

Even animal packs have rules that were created over time through survival. I.e., gorillas know from experience that doing XXX gets them killed. So when another gorilla tries to do that, they go ape shit on them rather than let the one gorilla endanger the entire group. (Pun intended).

Humans have learned over time that the most effective way to survive is in complimentary groups. That is, I can do X, you can do Y, we combine together to do X and Y. As a result of this basic survival instinct, we figured out that to live together we need rules. Otherwise we just get pissed and kill each other.

This law even extends to message boards on the internet. Message boards with no rules are inevitably flooded by spam, hate messages, and invariably fall apart and disappear. Boards with moderation to a certain set of rules tend to engender community, since there is at least a minimum standard of behavior.

For example, a user on many message boards would get banned for telling an immature narcissistic attention whore to fuck off. But no poster here would say that to another, because we have rules that forbid it so it's easier to get along.

But - you can do exactly as you please.
Someone may try to stop you, or you may face retribution and consequences - but that's just them doing as they please.
So, there you have it. Enjoy your new-found liberty.
