any mother, of any ethnic/cultural background, that does her job and raises her kid into responsible tax paying adults gets an automatic A in my book. Too bad a mother can only do so much to improve a kid who is an inherent-hopeless asshole.

BTW, don't summarily dismiss chinese culture. They were a great civilization when the ancestors of many posters in this thread were still swinging on tree tops picking/eating bananas. Cultural superiority means nothing in a span of a couple centuries.

My boss married an Asian lady, their daughter was apparently forced into an engineering major against her will. She used to eat with her parents at work and would constantly complain about being an engineer and how she wanted to do marketing, being a loser in the family for not going to graduate school, etc.

Yikes. That's when I'd say say, "Thanks for everything you've done for me, but I'll be moving out and doing my own thing from now on. Bye."

i think we are all just biological machines intended to build electromechanical machines capable of harnessing the way our brains work. build AI machines, the machines build themselves and humans go extinct because the environment changes too drastically. the machines live on which means in the grand scheme of things, life goes on. because thats all life really is, self replication. so this chinese mother thing hardly matters.

not that I completely disagree, but lol talk about random

They were a great civilization, until the rest of the world progressed onward and they stagnated. True progress comes from free thought. This kind of deeply rooted Confucianism is one of the things holding that country back from realizing its true potential. Frankly this article is infuriating. The self-righteous tone just makes me want to smack her. I'm glad my parents are nothing like her.

you can teach your kid how to become successful without robbing them of their childhood.

so your child plays at carnegie hall, once...like a generic robot and no one cares.

it takes a bit more f*cked up parenting to come up with a lady gaga.

I always wonder, what if the kid is naturally stupid or schooling is not something that he/she can be good at, then how does hitting him/her change his/her intelligence level?

Because its not art or anything they want you to do well in. Its all science, math, biology. Those subjects are NOT a matter of being intelligent, its about being able to study and memorize. Asian parents aren't dumb, they know exactly what is needed to do well in the world. Sure we all hear of the kid who was raised like a good boy and made his own company or something, but those are far and few between.

Practical knowledge and ability means that you have options, and that you can get professional jobs.

If you study, your grades will go up.

It's also social pressure. If asians hang around with other asians, you compete on grades, that's just how it is. And if your kid really IS that dumb, there's always cram school. From Kindergarden to Senior year high school, it was always cram schools for me. Always trying to do better in school, get those A's, be better than the kid next to me. THAT is why in a single generation, Asian immigrants tend to do very very very well in society.

You're making the trauma resurface. Though my dad was much much MUCH worse.

He still hasn't forgiven me for not becoming a doctor.

Sucks to be you, my parents (Korean) didn't care that much about grades (even though I got straight A's). Never pressured me to become a doctor, they just said do what you want to be happy and it wouldn't hurt if you made some money. At my Korean church there were many parents who were proud that their kids were going to Ivy League schools but there were also many who were similar to my parents and didn't pressure their kids.

Only except life isn't just about having a mansion and a S500/7series.
Asian immigrants does very very well in securing a good job and making lots of money, but it always makes me wonder what else in life they are sacrificing in their individuality supressing methods of parenting.

They are sacrificing everything they have for their kids. That's why I deal with my parents on my case even now in college. They still came to America 20 years ago without knowing a single bit of English. Now after years of work and study, they have professional jobs in the medical field. While the entire time sending me off to cram schools to study. Every single bit of extra money was spent trying to make me better at school so I could go to a good college. A ton of stress went into me so I would stop getting B's and get A's.

THAT is why this method of parenting works so well, sacrificing everything for the sake of your kid being successful in life.

And what do you mean by individuality? I consider myself an individual. Hell, Asian parents say you should go out and NOT be just another person but work toward being better than everyone else. You need to become an exceptional individual in order to be successful.

The best thing about Chinese Mothers is that after you eat one, you're hungry for more an hour later...

"The fact is that Chinese parents can do things that would seem unimaginable—even legally actionable—to Westerners. Chinese mothers can say to their daughters, "Hey fatty—lose some weight.""

I'm a prime example of this. "You're so fat, are you pregnant?"
