This style of parenthood is not the best method.

It teaches blind obedience and this entire notion that formal education and an unmotivated interest other pretentious activities equals success.

Why does the mother in the article teach their kids musical instruments? Isn't that something kids should voluntarily choose to learn because it's their passion? Not because the parents "made" them do it because that's the stereotypical version of "success."

One of my chinese friends parents were the direct opposite of the OP - Even though they were doctors who graduated from Stanford, they were pretty damn hippy and their son married a white girl, became a underpaid public servant (public school teacher), and has this weird thing about wearing flip flops all the damn time. He was a good student though, just didn't follow the traditional engineer/medical doctor path because his parents encouraged him to do what he wanted. Their other son went to Harvard, but pursued studies and a career in film making.

What? Obedience to your parents is a GOOD thing. Formal eduction DOES give you the best shot at being successful at life and how is studying or playing a musical instrument pretentious?

I also hated learning how to play instruments. But I kind of appreciate knowing how to play them now. I can play the Piano, Sax, and guitar, somewhat different from the stereotype of Piano, Violin, Flute, Cello, but nonetheless instruments.

Playing instruments also teaches you how to focus on a single task and practice practice, in order to apply those skills into your school work.

You're right about formal education, but focusing on studies to the exclusion of everything else (such as socialization, etc) is not the right way to go. You're only a child one time in your entire life and you should be given the opportunity to make and play with your friends and to discover your own interests, not what your parents tell you are your interests.

I was very good academically in high school and college, but at this stage in life, I care more about seeing the world and having new experiences than I do about going back for another degree. You only live once and I want to make sure I visit the places I've always dreamed of seeing and experience new sights, sounds, and cultures.

Playing instruments also teaches you how to focus on a single task and practice practice, in order to apply those skills into your school work.

So do many other hobbies.

Chinese is very easy to learn. It doesn't have the complex grammer system like English or Japanese. TBH, Chinese is more efficient because of the lack of the complex aforementioned systems.

The opposite is true. I've read articles about studies that were done and Chinese kids take twice as long to become compentent in their language than English speaking kids because Chinese is so difficult. Also, the Chinese character system is inefficient.

The article is misleading. It should mention that his applies only to asian mothers who were born and raised OUTSIDE of the US. First generation Asians who went to school and grew up around American culture are closer to white culture.

My parents were raised and lived in China for most of their lives. They're like that in every way mentioned in the article. However, my cousin was a second generation Asian American and their mother raised them more closer to American standards than Asian standards.

Blind obedience is NOT.

Secondly, parents with this parenting style (of any race) teach their kids education is the key to success, which is a false notion.

Define success. Spend your life slaving away as a doctor, working 60 hours a week, in college debt until you're 45, just so you can lease some crappy E class Benz or Lexus LS and live in some suburban cookie cutter house? Give me a freaking break.

Teach your kids to think outside the box and find a away to make a great living for themselves AND have plenty of free time.

Here's a great short video on the subject by a famous blogger: (watch the whole video)

He's not some get rich guru, he owns The Tech Zone and blogs at JohnChow.com. He's legit. He makes well over a million a year from his websites. But his point is that he's not only wealthy in money, but wealthy in time.

This is what is NOT taught by that parenting mindset. They're taught to be money making robots and work until your dead and live your life in the "system."

I say, make your own way. Go the path less travelled. This it he difference between Individualism and Collectivism. It's about "creating" yourself as a person. Not being a creation of the system. It's more than about money, it's about being "self made" in every sense.

Smart people have money. But wise people have time and money. It's philosophical. It's deep. Something most parents don't teach their kids.

so your child plays at carnegie hall, once...like a generic robot and no one cares.

it takes a bit more f*cked up parenting to come up with a lady gaga.

that made me smile. and I was in a bad mood. and I'm stubborn. thank you

I couldn't even finish reading the article because I felt so embarrassed for the author. Neither extreme is the answer.

I hope that was a tasteless joke that you made or you have just proved that whoever raised you possibly did a much worse job than a typical- stereo-typed chinese mother.

You obviously weren't beaten enough if you think stereotyped is hyphenated or that either hyphen you used is in any way correct. Now pull down your pants and bend over.

Yes, but your undersized penis makes you an honorary Asian.

Started reading the article and stopped after reading these stupid comments:

never allowed to do:

• attend a sleepover

• have a playdate

• be in a school play

• complain about not being in a school play

• watch TV or play computer games

• choose their own extracurricular activities

• get any grade less than an A

• not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama

• play any instrument other than the piano or violin

• not play the piano or violin.

I was in multiple school plays

Did homework while watching tv. Played video games.

Played HS football against my parents wishes

Played the trumpet

Same here. I read that, and I was done. What kind of childhood, or rather LIFE, is that creating for those kids? I feel sorry for them.

我同意。我認為日语比較難學。

WTF? It's one of the most difficult languages to learn. Did you learn it? Obviously not, because you said "Chinese".

我認為英文很難學。“colonel"怎麼發音?"through","tough","cough" 怎麼發音?為什麼它們發音不一樣?還有你們ATOT的人都不知道怎麼用“they're","there"或"their".

It's all about the odds. One can live and let live and you get random. Or one can set their child's bar high and demand excellence and you'll usually get it. I am a live and let live type my only job is to raise healthy and moral individuals - just my personality but I see value in other method. Someone needs to be cog in the wheels.

Basically everything Narmer says is false. Only the degree is the question. When he's making racist statements it's way out there. This isn't to bad. Thai, Russian, Cantonese etc are all hard tho.

Man. I wish my Chinese were better. Then I could understand more than half of what you guys are saying...

The woman writing the article is kind of right. Chinese parents do give up everything to give their children the best chance at life. It's not uncommon to hear about people who starve themselves so they can afford meat for children who are in athletic training. But the discipline thing is also only partly right. I once overheard a conversation between two of my aunts competing over which of my cousins was the more spoiled.

Define success. Spend your life slaving away as a doctor, working 60 hours a week, in college debt until you're 45, just so you can lease some crappy E class Benz or Lexus LS and live in some suburban cookie cutter house? Give me a freaking break.
Having lots of money isn't everything. But having no money is.
