Why complain about a laptop's weight?

Really. Is carrying around 5 pounds instead of 2.5 pounds really going to affect you? And just think of how much more stuff you can pack into it, if you don't have to worry about the weight constrictions. It's all about functionality. I'd gladly use a 7 pound laptop and not bitch about it. I'm currently a dissastisfied IBM i1300 laptop owner. It's light. And mostly plastic. It falls apart! GEEZ. Make it out of steel. *sigh*

It depends, with a really good laptop bag, the weight differences are minimsed, however, after walking around all day with my big fat IBM A31, I sometimes wish for a slightly lighter machine. Plus, sometimes I am actually supporting the damn thing with my wrists for minutes at a time and it can get quite heavy. All in all, though, I think that laptop bags are a deliberate conspiracy by laptop makers in order to convice people that thin and lights are neccesary.

It depends on how long and how far you usually carry it. If all you do is say take the laptop and walk into your office, put it down and start working then no problem. If you travel a lot then yes, every pound makes a difference.

i flew all over the US w/my laptop, and it is great.

i used to fly around w/a dell 8200, and that was some SUPER heavy stuff.

NOT FUN to carry a heavy laptop.

Well, by the same logic, everyone should have a full tower instead of a smaller form factor - mid-size, compact, etc. It could even apply to cars - shouldn't everyone then just get an 18 wheeler? To some, size just does not matter, and its all about quality. To others, they care. With a laptop, I would have no problem lugging around a 15 pound Sager if it had all the features I could ask for. Then again, I may not be carrying very much with me anyway (or I just wouldn't complain, because I would know that as soon as I put down my laptop that I could do whatever I wanted to do). For those carrying a 2.5 pound notebook, and a briefcase full of clutter, and a phone, and a pda, and a wallet, blah blah, it just does not become very convenient. Its just a matter of preference like so many other things. ANd just looking at the number of people who opt for "thin and light" notebooks, you can see that if available, people will most definitely opt for it.

I have to bring mine to school every day and carry it my backpack all day, so a couple of pounds makes a big difference, especially when you also have books and binders to carry. I think my laptop is already kind of heavy, so I couldn't imagine having ot carry a 8 or 9 pounder with me.

The reason I didn't get a sub-notebook was I wanted to be able to play games, but I almost never game on it anyways. My next one will be tiny...

remember what laptops are for? To be carried around. They gotta be portable IMO. A 7 pound monster just sucks, give me a 12" PowerBook anyday

I've recently had to carry mine around in my backpack and I find my back hurting a bit after lugging it around for half an hour. The thickness matters to me too because I have to carry around books too.

I was in the, how much of a difference can weight possibly make camp untill I got my inspiron 600m. Its amazing how much ligher a 4-5 pound notebook feels when compared to a 8 pound notebook, espically when you're carrying it all over the place for school and stuff. It works well with gaming due to its 64MB Mobility Radeon 9000. Who says gaming notebooks need to be heavy desktop replacements?

I carry my five pound laptop from home to the car and from the car to work and it is not too heavy. But I might have a different perspective if I had to carry it around for eight to ten hours a day.

Most people do not need an 18 wheeler particularly for driving to work or the quick trip to the grocery store.

I don't mind a heavy lappy. I run an IBM A22p and it weighs a ton. Doesn't bother me though because I just cart it between the office and the house.

My boss, on the other hand, is 70 years old and does about 100K travel miles a year. He needs a smaller lighter box to carry through the airport and to meetings, etc.

It's all in what fits the individual

Like everyone says, if you have to carry your lappy with you everyone the extra weigth counts!

I had an old Toshiba Satelitte 490XCDT that weighted 3.5Kg(don't have a conversion tool handy!) and last christmas I god a great deal on a new Compaq Evo N160 that only weights 3.0Kg and believe me is a lot different, and better yet the Evo is thinner than the Satelitte which makes it much better!!!

Long live the Small Lapys and SFF computers, one of which will be my next home computer!

i have an older model sony vaio superslim 505tl. I think it is 3.7 or 3.9lbs undocked. Let me say from experience that the extra weight makes a difference. The smaller the laptop, the more interesting positions for using it are possible. I use mine in combination with wireless internet in every room of my apartment, often sitting in different chairs and couches when i get stiff from sitting in one place too long. I recommend looking small in terms of notebooks, esp. if you already have desktop to do the more powerful stuff. then get wireless.

If anyone remembers the beginnings with the Osbourn and the K-Pro portables followed soon by the Compaq and Televideo portables you remember numbers like only 25 lbs.

More recently 10 to 12 lbs became the norm and 7-8 lbs were light or super light portables. Now we are looking at 5-6 lbs for totables and 3-5 lbs for true poratbles.

As the weight of portables has fallen the percentage of overweight Americans has gone up. Cause and Effect?
