Jay was talking about retiring, so NBC signed a contract with Conan to give him the Tonight Show. Then Leno decided he didn't want to retire, so NBC signed a contract with him to give him a new Primetime show (which they were probably having trouble filling anyway) and to keep Leno from going to another channel.

After watching conan's last show, I think NBC made a big mistake by moving him to the Tonight Show. He's not mainstream enough.

Actually, Conan was being courted by other networks, so NBC decided to strongarm Jay into giving up the Tonight Show. Jay never wanted to but he had to since he wasn't in charge.

I guess that's part of it too.

Personally, I would have let Conan go. Leno >>> Conan

leno's schtick got old. the last few years he relied on the ask the idiots on the street skit too much and it became way overdone, and really lame videos of someone dancing but with his face superimposed on it. i did like his monday shows where he did the ads though

He's mainstream for the only demographic that matters though. 18-35 year old males.

I never thought Leno was that great. I find Conan to be funnier. But all these people after Conan suck.

We were better off with Leno + Conan than Conan and these morons.

Late Night has always been the better show...or at least the show that created the most buzz. Whether it was Letterman or Conan, it was the show that people talked the most about.

That's because of the slot. 11:30 is middle America, the stuff people fall asleep to in Iowa and Nebraska. The later slot can be edgier because it draws a different crowd. Letterman got less funny when he moved to the earlier time and Conan will too.

This is the truth.

Conan was threatening to leave, so they promised him the tonight show in 5 years.

That 5 years has come and gone.

I don't really watch any of them much, just like I don't subscribe to People magazine or listen to random Catholic priests' sermons for the hilarious and topical jokes, but the few times I've caught Craig Ferguson's monologue, I've really like it, and him . . . so, yeah, agreed.

Most likely true about Conan.

So very, very backwards. I haven't seen Conan's new one yet, but if he's even at 40% of where he was before, that's still 100 times better than Leno.

I was apprehensive. Didn't think Conan would fit in. . . but I have watched all episodes so far and have been quite pleased. I like Leno but Conan will fill his shoes just fine.

I got tired of Conan after a year or two but i got tired me Jay as well. Conan's jokes are too juvenile for the time slot he's in. Older people watch the tonight show compared to late night. He relies too much on kiddie humor that i'm sure will turn off much of the older crowd. He'll either change or fail.
