Why did my X1900XT die?

Its not completely dead, but its on its last legs. Why did that happen? Its not even that old! How come it died?? I didnt overclock it or screw with pcie settings in the bios, only overclocked the cpu, which is rock solid.

Ok maybe i used overdrive a little, to overclock it 10-15 mhz on the core but thats it. Surely that didnt kill it, as it would only do that when i game, and i dont game all that much, the things been sitting idle for a good chunk of its life.

PSU could have had something to do with it, lots of things can get funny when you OC.

Its a seasonic S12 500w, it shoudlve been fine.

LOL...i can't see a 10-15 mhz OC killing a x1900xt, how long did you have the x1900xt, and what were it's avg. temps?

I had it for around 7 months. The average temps were 40-50's idle i think and 70-80's under load. I gather that was normal for an X1900.

For stock cooling, yes.

Perhaps you should have invested in an Accelero X2

I never feel comfortable seeing a GPU reach high 70's or above. While within operating specs it still makes me nervous.

Totally Then i can sell the replacement and be happy with my new 7900 GTO

Overclocking the card 15 MHz is not going to kill it several months later. That's just paranoia to the extreme.

Looks like the retail cooling didn't do that great of a job keeping it safe (though temperatures were good... odd).

One thing I notice in 3d mode with my X1900XTX is a slight hissing sound the RAM modules make -- at STOCK settings! I don't think these cards are built to last; good thing they come with good warranties (well, non BBA ones at least ).

Yea, poor lil fellar, e just a few months old too!

I can assume that temperatures killed it then? Either that or it was bad from day 1, which might explain the unexplainable (albeit rare) crashes with starcraft, possibly one of the most solid patched games around. I used to get "cannot read memory at xxx" with quite a few other games too, starcraft included. I blamed it on the games though, as c&c the first decade isnt known for being a rock of stability over at planet c&c.

None of my business but I think that switching sides because of 1 defective product is...Silly.

The xt is a great performance expecially considering price/performance ratio.

So is the 7900 GTO. Plus i dont really consider it as "sides" i just buy what i believe is best for me. Which is the 7900 GTO.

What PSU are you using? I've heard that the electronic hissing (best way I have to describe it) people hear sometimes is from capacitors. Usually a result of not enough power being supplied to the card.

It happens in BF2 menu's for me. I've gota Seasonic Supser Silencer 460 watt. It doesn't happen much at all while actually playing only in the menu's.

Well yours lasted longer than mine! My Sapphire XT spit out random green pixels all over m desktop when I exited Oblivion for the VERY FIRST time. I only played for about an hour or so. It's RMA's so now I wait for Newegg to replace it. I have to say though, I'm now using the CF Edition x1900 and this thing runs HOT. Alt-tabbing from Oblivion to look at Everest's readings shows upwards of mid-90's!

Should I be worried?

Hmmm....that is strange. My previous X1900XTX finally bit the dust when I accidently had a drop or two of water on it that went unseen. Strange thing was, it booted up into Windows fine before it died. Only when I went to open an application did I see the end of it's life. Heck even when it was dead it still did better than one of the other fried 7800GT's I had laying around. The 7800GT wouldn't even let the system fire up with it in there but my X1900XTX would let everything power up, it just wouldn't post anything.

I think these cards are able to last due to their 2D frequencies that can occupy a good amount of their existence. I simply love the fact that I can use as high of volts as I want, or as low without having to do a hack job on the pcb's. Everything can be handled through the desktop.

As far as your card's unfortunate death, I'm sorry that happend. I know how much that sucks.

I think mine was quirky from day 1, so unless yours is too it should probably be fine.

Yep.... its a tough time for us who have had a card die, just gonna have to take it one day at a time... one day at a time
