Why Do Aperature Grill (trinitron) monitors suck to me?

I've had 3 trinitron monitors.

A viewsonic a75f and a90f, and a sony G420.

All aperature Grill (trinitron) screens.

However, they always seemed slightly blurry, and the screen seemed to shake slightly. This has happened on every comp I've ever tried them on too.

However, my Hitachi CRT uses an Invar Shadow mask, and the text is super clear and not blurry, and the screen does not shake at all.

Everyone says Aperature Grill is better, but why do they always suck for me?

Are you comparing the aperture grill monitors and the Hitachi one on the same video card and same location?
Also, invar shadow mask screens are usually better at displaying text than AG monitors. AG monitors usually have better color I believe.

Shadow masks generally render text better than aperture grills. Since the grill is almost flush mounted against the tube it is somewhat sensitive to vibration, which is why AG monitors have those two slightly visible damper wires. But when it comes to eye-popping graphics and colors, AG monitors just seem to steal the show.

I love my Sony (aperture grill) monitor. I've always liked it better than other monitors I've seen.

I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Some people love Heineken. On the other hand, someone else might think there is nothing better than a nice , cold Shaeffer beer.

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Everyone says Aperature Grill is better

Who? From what I've seen monitor reviews seem split 50/50 between aperature grille being on top and shadow mask being on top. Basically it comes down to the reviewers personal preference. Thus I highly disagree that everyone says it is better.

To me, I'm a perfectionist for many things. I am highly disturbed by the constant black lines disrupting my games, and breaking the continuity of my work. So that means aperature grill monitors are out of the picture (given that everything else is equal).

In general terms an aperature grill monitor is usually brighter at default settings than an shadow mask monitor. Thus you must turn up the brightness and that can wash out the colors a bit. On the otherhand I generally feel that aperature grill monitor cannot display truely straight lines without distortion (I work with wireframe CAD type models a lot and this is quite noticible). Note: these are just general trends - a quality monitor of either type will be better than a shabby monitor of the other type.

Hehe Maybe that's a hint for you to not get another AG screen and just stick with shadow mask since you've gone through 3 AG models and just one shadow mask screen. Don't go by what someone else says, if it looks good to you, then what does it matter? Shadow mask is better for text IMO since dot pitch is usually smaller on shadow mask tubes but aperature grill tubes offer a brighter and more vibrant color for images. I like the shadow mask for most of the 2d flat text stuff that I do like office apps and graphics, but the aperature grill looks great in a fast paced fps game. To each his own..

It IS a matter of opinion. I have to agree however, I HATE AG monitors. I do a lot of graphics work, so I bought some relatively inexpensive KDS brand monitor with a Trinitron screen (can't remember exact model) thinking it would be good for me. I couldn't freaking stand the way it looked.

I thought, OK, it is a cheap brand, I exchanged it for a Sony brand ... still hated it.

Sharp lines and text didn't look good to me. Overall I felt it was rather harsh on the eyes.

I now have a really cheap, bottom of the line, Viewsonic A70 and LOVE it ^_^ It's interesting that I"m so happy with it because I am really picky when it comes to quality and suck.

Yes, my friends cheap a$$ A70 looked better than my 400 dollar Sony 19" AG monitor, except for it only being 17" and curved.

Thats why I just ordered my brand spanking new Hitachi CM721F which is a 19" flat screen Shadow Mask Tube. I'm excited.

At my old workplace, we used FE950+ monitors. I did desktop support there, and I noticed those models were sometimes affected by interference. Sometimes when I placed the monitor directly on the compaq desktop, the picture would get blurry and shakey. I would fix the problem by moving the pc to the side of the monitor.

I too prefer the Shadow mask over the Aperture grille. It seems the AG monitors are more sensitive to things like vibration, and such. I had ordered the Samsung 1200 NF and I could only get it to run without the image shaking at one resolution. 1280 x 960 I think it may have been dropped during shipping. I really hated the huge cabinet it came in. So when I sent it back I had them replace it with a Hitachi CM823F 21" flat screen. I'm running it at 38% brightness with contras at 100% I seem to be able to get richer colors than with the 1200 NF. I tried hard to get the rich colors out of the 1200NF because I had heard that the AG grille was suppose to have such rich colors. I was a little disappointed. Not bad, but just not as good as I thought it was suppose to be. can be seen here.
