Because of Jersey Shore and its predecessors. Most of us aren't that bad but if you watched American TV I couldn't blame you for thinking we're nothing but a bunch of pants shitting drunken retards over here. The truth is we rarely shit our pants these days.

I'd say there's quite a bit of truth to your point above.

E.g., I lived in (West) Berlin back in the late 80's for a couple of years. That was when Berlin was split and West Berlin was basically a small island behind the Iron Curtain. Anyhoo, I spent a considerable amount of time while there studying German history, availing myself of their libraries, museums and such. Of course I also asked many questions of my German friends. It occurred to me that they never seemed to ask me any questions about the USA. I was curious about their apparent lack of curiosity, none had ever visited the USA nor did I ever see any Americans around. One day at a restaurant where many of us had gathered for brunch I asked them why they never asked any questions of me. I was surprised by their answer, and bear in mind some of these people were professionals. They had no questions because they already knew everything about the USA. You see, they got our TV shows like Miami Vice and such so they already knew what the USA was like!

It's kind of funny actually, I lived in London, England prior to moving to Berlin and there they all assumed I was a drug dealer because I had been living in Miami before moving there and they all saw "Miami Vice' too. I guess they thought there were only two occupations in Miami: cop or drug dealer

Given our current crop of TV shows I'm guessing Europeans have a very low estimation of Americans since many seem to base their opinion on those.

Otherwise, I find it quite normal that they believe their culture is superior to ours here. Why wouldn't they. They grow up in their own culture. The French, English, German etc culture are unique and different, it's what they know and like.

Yeah - it was very interesting to me to see some of thhe misconceptions about Americans when I did my study abroad. Topping the list was the view that we all go to McDonalds several times a day, we all live in areas riddled with gun violence and all have multiple firearms at home

The flagwaving part, absolutely


I'm not bashing the USA, I go to the USA regularly and I have always enjoyed the experience. But the USA no1 flagwaving always reminds me of the stuff you only see on China or North Korean state television.

To be honest, I think that Americans are pretty self centred. When I'm in the USA and I watch news programs, I'm always amazed how little news is shown about the rest of the world. It's like it doesn't exist and that why that pic is LOL worthy because it is the truth. It's all USA news or at the least where the USA is involved (Iraq, Afghanistan, ...) or it has to be some kind of "amazing" story (like the Chilean mine workers)

Just watch CNN USA and CNN international to see the difference or watch something like BBC world news and you will see what I mean
