Why do people ask yes or no questions...

...and then act offended when you give them a yes or no answer? Give me something to work with.

Because at age 5 we were taught to elaborate on our answers to be a decent human being and not a robot.

What if it's a question not about a belief or something that requires elaboration?

And I find your post highly offensive as someone that was self-diagnosed with Asperger's.

Unfortunately, children are taught all sorts of things that are flat out wrong.

Don't leave it to me to try to decipher WTF you really want to know. Ask a clear question and you'll get a clear answer. It seems, especially with email, questions are so poorly thought out that they don't deserve any reply at all.

People in RL seem to avoid asking me questions, because they usually don't like honest answers a lot of the time I guess.

I just roll with it.

If they're offended by the 'yes' or 'no', it seldom helps to explain your motivations. Usually results in a very deep hole without a ladder.

A variation:

Offering someone Option A or Option B, and they answer with "Yes."

I assume that they meant the first option in that case, as attention spans these days tend

If someone answered "Yes" to an "A or B?" question, and it wasn't an intended joke response (e.g. "Are you a boobs or butt man?" "Yes."), I'd immediately file them in my retard folder.

Rarely is A or B the best choice. Yes (both) or No (neither) are often what's needed.

This is a daily occurrence at my place of work where it involves the public.

Yes or no questions are a control freak thing. I don't really value your opinion I just want a handle to manipulate. Yes or no. Your rationale, I'll infer later. Yes or no.

No ironwing they're used to achieve an outcome like "Do you want dinner now" or does this meet your needs?
You'd dick around all day getting to a goal with all open ended questions.

The 'yes' response there just means 'I don't care, just get out of my face with the triviality and sort out the main problem'.

On the other hand a 'No' response means that the person thinks that you're an idiot and that you need to stop and rethink your whole project from the beginning.
